Taking delivery of our new (to us) sealine s28 on monday and we want to re name it but, as I understand its supposed to be bad luck !!
Any rituals we should follow to ward of the gods of the sea ??:ghost:

it's was only bad luck in the old days when the name was carved into the stern. it was said putting a new name on would weaken the stern structure once the original was removed.

you normally have to get the pope to bless the boat and all will be okay.

It was also the case that in the bad old days, an elderly ship might end up getting patch repaired and renamed a few times in an attempt to disguise how dodgy the ship was.

Insured to the hilt, some owners didn't care much if the ship and it's cargo actually made it to the destination or not, but understandably, the crew had different priorities.

Ok so.......think of name, remove old name, put on new name, splash some tizer on the bow then get pissed on champagne , next day after head ache go to cowes (on boat) and drink some more.
Got it !!!

The old name comes off,
The new name goes on,
Find a bottle of Veuve Clicquot or similar, and pop the cork.
A small splash on the bow: the rest is for the skipper and crew :)

.

When I have done it, remove old name , fit newname, open a bottle of champagne one splash on bow, one splash to Neptune (ie tip some in the ogin) and bless the boat.

Not using champagne could bring bad luck!

Oh also don't forget to change Part 1 registration, SSR or local registration details.

I've changed the name on all of my boats and just about to get another new (to me) one. Look at it another way, the boat is starting a new chapter in its life, personalise it with a new name, look after it well and it will look after you :-). You will always hear of this being used as a reason why something happened, whatever it was would have happened anyway! As that idiot on the reality music show keeps on saying (ahem....apparently), 'make it your own' ........ ;-)

I have changed the name on several of my boats and I've had terrible luck as a result. I've never won the lottery and I'm still married to the same woman. My advice is just don't do it:eek:
