Bad experience - What are my options?

Well I got through today. Here is the response in short:

The reconditioned compressor I said was my original. - They used my clutch off the knackered one, but the compressor itself is apparently refurbed hence I was able to identify it (the wiring plug terminals were still full of paint and the pulley too - PO overspill when he was painting the engine. The compressors were disconnected back then and since hence me doing this job)

My other compressor apparently had a service / test (I sent this one in to be checked as it had lain dormant for a good few years also disconnected) I said on the board it hadn't been opened for an inspection, he confirmed it hadn't been opened, that they don't do that but sit it in a vice and spin it up using a drill to check for hi - lo spots and tightness. The clutch I said hadn't been checked. He confirmed they dont check the clutch. It's plug connector too is still painted closed. So an obvious point.

My oil cooler that was sent in to have an oil pressure check, to find that they had recored it as stated. Too much effort so they sent me a pressure tested 2nd hand unit, not recored. I've asked for my original cap back so I can at least winterise and drain raw water from the system going forward.

They apologised for parts not sent, fair play, I should expect them by Friday delivery. We shall see.

I expressed I was not confident that the work had been done as fully as was anticipated, they have offered an extended six months warranty.

Short of going into dispute where no one wins, I will probably settle. It was not the service or antipated works I was expecting, part of that may be my own ignorance on what could / should be done. It would be nice to be able to always afford new parts and not go budget, but then again this has to be balanced against what is a 20 year old boat anyway. So lesson learned, and at least I have made some trusted contacts who may be able to offer services and parts next time round.

At least you got a little satisfaction, maybe next time you will do your own "fixing" as advised on wsf? Any real complicated stuff do as advised by VP.

I cant see me ever needing to use them, but it might help some to avoid any similar "misunderstandings" if you were to name them. Merely on the basis that, if anyone is going to use them, they need to be absolutely clear that they need to be absolutely specific about what they are going to get for their money before commiting to the work.

My own fixing would be a fraught with risk :disgust: but in future I might be tempted "to try harder" cheeky git lol

It seems their rep preceded them but before I slander anyone on an open forum I believe it fair to have spoken first with the business to hear their side and attempt to resolve. I may not be entirely happy with their services, but I don't want to instigate a witch hunt, just know what my options were realistically. C'est la Vie, lesson learned. I will certainly be using VolvoPaul in future. I knew he was a guru, didn't realise he was in the trade.

They've been as good as named with the various broad hints :)

I've bought parts from them before and had no complaints, apart from one time where they were the only one listing a particular part, I ordered it, and got a phone call a couple of days later asking what it was, and could I perhaps send a photo of the existing one on my engine so they could see if they had anything on the shelf that looked like it. I'd ordered from their own online shop, which included the Volvo part number and I think even a picture. They had to concede that they didn't actually have one after all.

Not had any work done by them, and I'll make sure I don't now.

Interesting, I almost ordered a recon DP-E drive a few weeks back but decided to spend some time and inquire how they decided what parts to reuse or not...I was not happy with the response and decided on a local rebuild.
There were simply no way of knowing if the recon drive would live another 100h or 1000h. When pushing the issue I was asked if the boat was a in commercial use as if that would make a difference to the relevance of my questions.....

bought a second hand suspension fork for a 290 dp a couple of years ago. It was a few days late arriving but apparently that was because it needed to be inspected and refurbished. Turned up rough painted with a bit of corrosion that made seating a bit iffy and the old bearings (nylon type shims) still in place and painted over but it looked serviceable. Wasn't until I came to fit the triangle anode and realised the web was twice as thick as the other side that I worked out they had welded a plate onto it. Volvo specifically list the bits of this item that can and can't be welded, the bit they had was on the do not weld list.

I started a thread about a certain company a few years back. I did not know that there is a UK alternativeOldgit put me right, and I quote

"I'll certainly heed your words but alas I fear many of us may end up speaking to CR at some point - room for someone new perhaps to specialise in bravo legs, in the SW would be good :-)"

There is..... and has been for several years.Used these people several times for my repairs.Small company where you can actually talk to the chap who will be doing the repairs and get to look round their workshop located out on Romney Marsh.

I have had work done was IVSS in the past when a previous boat was infected with the Devils Propulsion system. They did a decent job for me..
What usually happens is the things store a nice collection of hidden problems over time and the current owner eventually realises whats about to hit him and sells. Some other poor mug gets lumbered with the bill.
Lesson is to be very very very careful indeed buying anything with outdrives.
Get somebody who knows what they are doing to check them out or deduct more than enough from asking price to cover any major disasters.
Ask anybody prepared to stick their head above the parapet and defend the things what they have on their boat and guarantee they are already lumbered with the horrid things.
Everybody else will run a nautical mile :)

Have to say my outdrive has been fine in the 6 years since it was fitted, but not to sure I would want an old one as theres plenty of horror stories out there.
Plus ny outdrive is getting closer to ryc as Im now moored just across the river at syc, it might be infectious:D

Missing parts now all in and confirmed 6 month warranty on what work done. So for me, hopefully, this closes the chapter. I just hope the clutches actually work or I'll be stripping down again.
I have to be honest and say much of my own dissapointment was due to my ignorance. Afterall if I send in a whole unit for testing, I expect a whole unit to be tested. In this instance the compressor clutch too. And when I buy a reconditioned unit, the whole unit, not a part of it. I am dissapointed in the lack of communication and unscheduled works re oil cooler but concede I probably would have made the decision to recore / replace, albeit that is not what I got anyway. Only time now will tell. Hopefully I will not have to invoke any warranty and hopefully I get to eat some humble pie because all goes well. If not... well watch this space.
