i am thinking of buying a second hand backup plotter from a known good source, its a hand held garmin 60csx, are these any good? or would you go for something else? eg magellan
main plotter is rayc70, this is just in case really

I've got a Garmin 276C as a second plotter backup to the Raymarine E80. Approx 5-7hrs on batteries, just in case!!!

You should be able to get a good price, as it's soon to be superceded.

I just bought a Garmin Etrex at the Boat Show, simple cheap and most important waterproof, so if we are going down we can still tell someone exactly where we are via the waterproof handheld VHF (if its all as waterproof as they say that is!)

It does not have maps but draws its own as it goes, so I guess you could follow it back if required and reference the paper charts.

We have a Garmin 176 (I think) as a backup.
Never used it.
Keep an old Garmin 12 in the grab bag.

I, do however, use an IPaq with a bluetooth link to a GPS.
The IPaq has Maptech raster charts installed.
I use the same raster charts on a PC to plan longer passages then output the routes onto CMap charts that the boat uses.
Works well for me and gives me a completely separate backup - the routes also appear on the IPaq PDA so you can double check on the boat's performance/accuracy.

60CX is great, I got one this summer as back up, plenty of features easy to use and very robust.
I am amazed at the pick up of the signal, even from the cabin much better than the previous generation.

I would consider a h/h which can run the same software as your fixed plotter so that you can have a full back up for the data on your main plotter.
