I am hoping to take my Falcon 23 further afield from Conwy this year. Problem is the tank is only 45 gallons and the lack of petrol between Conwy and Pwhelli reduces the options.

How safe is it to use an extra one (or two) portable tanks/cans and can anyone recommend a supplier ?

Army Surplus Jerry cans work well but they are difficult to refil on the move - they can be bought with "clamp-on" spouts but 20 litres of fuel hanging over the side of you boat may be difficult. Otherwise a cheap and easy solution. They can be stored in many places to even up the trim /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I do it all the time on longer trips, then use a plastic siphon pump (one of those clear plastic jobs, with a little bellows pumps and a valve - costs under a fiver in chandlers)

A better alternative is what BarryH put together with an outboard fuel connector into the existing fuel tank, then you can simply plug in outboard fuel containers while under way.

Carrying petrol on board is unsafe at best and could be disastrous at worst. Advise strongly against filling tanks from spare tanks using anything plastic or nylon as a filler device - static sparks can result. If you must fill this way then use a proper zinc/metal pourer and keep it in close contact with filler neck. Don't get me wrong, I used to do this too and then I saw an ex boat that had exploded while refuelling main tank from carry onboard tanks. It also convinced me that diesel was a safer bet too. Cheers. Roy
