Back to the UK for a winter refit

I would echo the comments already made Jimmy, great job and a great thread :)

Having done similar (but less extensive) in the past I know how much work is involved but the sense of satisfaction and achievement makes it all worthwhile :)

^^^^^^^^ I concur, brilliant thread with brilliant results^^^^^^^^^ :cool::encouragement:

So true, the platform is a great mod especially as it is so visible.

The works to the engines and cooling systems were probably more important and will give you a great deal more confidence too when out at sea. :encouragement:

I was looking forward to seeing pics of the engines back in.
Did I miss that post?

Great job James, if you didn't know the stock T40 platform you'd never guess it was a mod, it looks completely OE.

It's a shame you didn't get to do the audio upgrade, because what Vega really needs is a bigger stereo! :D

I can see some serious Rosé being consumed next weekend
Agreed! There should be a forum party on Jimmy's new bathing platform next weekend to celebrate his achievement but I suspect he's going to be a miserable git and spirit Vega back off to France before we have a chance to drop red wine and sausage roll crumbs on his new teak:D

Don't get too wrapped up in the number of TVL. Good electronics will generally have around 650-750 TVL these days but the reality is you won't generally see any more detail. 1000 TVL is a bit of a made up number so ignore it. There are HD options up to 1080P (1920 x 1080 pixels) but they will all require specialist equipment and your monitor might not be able to display the results. Generally the CCTV systems into which these cameras are connected record at D1 resolution - 720 x 576 pixels.

You might come across people claiming improved image resolution using 960H cameras. Ignore them, the pixel density is identical to D1. The extra pixels get shoved on the end of the image to change it from 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 aspect ratio.

As you rightly say going wider angle causes more pixel spread as you move away from the camera, this means less detail. 3.6mm gives around 70 degree angle of view, 2.8mm gives around 90 degrees - however - it all depends on the image sensor size. I am assuming a 1/3 inch sensor. If the camera uses a 1/4 inch sensor then the angles of view will decrease. The problem is you never really know what you are getting with cheap CCTV, ignore what it says in the advertising blurb.

As you say, see how you get on before you start throwing vast sums at the problem.

edited to say - meant to say the platform looks absolutely stunning :)

Henry :)

Thanks for this explanation Henry, v usefu . This is the camera that I fitted:
http://www.securicamcctv.com/products/analogue-cameras/1000-tvl-1-3-sony-cmos-fixed-lens-3-6mm.html

Can you supply an appropriate analogue minidome camera with a 2.9mm lens?

That's a shame, was looking forward to seeing Vega, what you've done is a real credit to your vision to improve the boat and to all the great craftsmen that you've involved and employed. Look forward to seeing you in the Cherub one day..............

Yep, I'm v disapointed - I have happy memories of a cruise to the Dart with Illusion a few years ago, and very much wanted to repeat the experience. Still, you're very welcome to come down to PV and have a look at the boat there! :D

Yep, in fact I have just endured an unpleasantly bumpy run from Brighton round to Swanwick ahead of transport load tomorrow morning. Maybe we should have a bike trip across the Alps and down to Antibes? :D

Have a bike trip along Cote D'Azur, Clarkson style, with TCM - he is there in July, biking.

He asked me where he can rent a high octane motorbike down there. Any ideas?

I don't know of anywhere first hand - but I know a man who will know the answer to this (the chap that owns the place that stores the scooter at St Laurent du Var). I'm in there on Monday so can ask the question then if you like?

Separately, Wattsons have just confirmed that my new cockpit table will be delivered tomorrow morning; what teak oil (specifically) do you use on yours? (I'm wondering if I should try and put some on the boat tomorrow before it goes).

Yes please ask.

I use the starbrite "premium golden" stuff http://www.sheridanmarine.com/product/star-brite-premium-teak-oil. That said, this winter I sanded my capping rails and applied a zillion coats of gloss varnish, then a final coat of silk epifanes, and I'm really pleased with it so I'm going to do the tables in varnish too. It looks v similar to the oil, but I think will mean less mid-season maintenance. I don't think I have time pre-season because proper varnishing takes quite a while, so I'll stick with oil on the tables this season, then sand and varnish winter 32015/16. (I'm trying to cut down on maintenance effort!)

You may or may not have heard of Ship that carried the name "Vega" a neutral Steamship that was chartered in the last two years of WW11 to bring red cross food parcels from Portugal to Guernsey and Jersey to the civilian population who were starving?

In fact I did know about this, when I bought the boat I initially kept her on the Guernsey register, and Josh, the incredibly helpful registrar there told me about the significance of the name.

Well done Jimmy - I bet Vega feels like owning a new boat.

Is the new cockpit table a portable one - if so, will it fit on the new bathing platform???
At least, you should now be able to have that chair beside the water anyway!!

You know, it actually does. It sort of feels like a free new boat, if you know what I mean - mainly because there's been no big lump-sum payment (which there is when you buy a new boat). I'm looking forward to unwrapping it all once I get it back to France, and playing with all the new toys.

No - it's just a replacement table top for the existing cockpit table. I've got no plans (or requirement, for that matter) for dining on the platform. My sole intention with the new platform is to be able to sit on it on my chair and drink a beer.

I think I would be tempted to get a small folding wooden teak table (coffee table style) to put alongside your chair - somewhere to put that cool beer.
In fact we have had one on board since the last boat and have done just that in the past.
I think we will need some pics!!
