Back to the UK for a winter refit

Nice job!
We had our boat name done in stainless and the guy who did it suggested a backing to each letter (some kind of plastic with polished edges). We went for it and the result is excellent. A more defined effect than stainless alone. Might be worth considering petem :)

Interesting, do you have a side on pic? Can you recall the thickness of the stainless and the plastic? Any more details you could PM me?

v.nice J.

anyone care to tell what is the thickness of the ss and how is it glued to the grp?
Seems to be a recess between the steel and the backing plate or some sort of foamy gluey thing. Wont that gather dirt of all shorts and be difficult to clean?

Just yesterday I was looking at the autocad file with the name for mine and got to get some quotes for the letters

cheers

V

Hi Vas,

It's 2mm stainless (cut from pre polished 316 sheets). Attached with 3m vhb tape. In Greece you might be able to get an engineering firm to polish after cutting if mirror stainless not available.

Pete

thanks Pete,

main issue is due to painted hull, I wouldn't dare glue the letters as removing them will mostlikely damage the paintwork and I'm not keen on masking elaborate forms when respraying. Will probably check the drill and bolt through option but I'm worried that the mig/tig whatever welding will leave a mark on the front of the polished letter. Anyone got some experience on that?

cheers

V.

PS. sorry for the slight thread drift J

V V nice indeed, makes me considering to have one done for the old lady.
She always had a very basic blue label, which I thought was consistent with the un-flashy overall look of the vessel.
But I'm sure she wouldn't mind a small flashy touch.... :D

@ Pete: what sort of input is necessary, would the computer font be enough?
@ Vas: I see what you mean, and I would be in the same boots. Otoh, in my experience the hull/superstructure paint, if well done, lasts at least 6 if not 8 years.
In the grand scheme, I don't think it would be a big deal to re-touch a few parts under the name, after each repaint.

Well, frankly the "R" is hard to read, sort of.
But I also would have kept the OEM look, fwiw.
If anything, you might have considered calling her a 42, by now... :D

Aha. Thanks Mapism; capsco's post wasn't very specific. I take your point, although I didn't design the graphics, Fairline did, and all I have done is just render their design in stainless. I like the OE look. (I did toy with changing it to a Targa 40-S, but thought better of it :D)

Yep, apologies to JTB for the drift, and thanks 2 u for your explanations in the other thread - which I actually missed so far, for some reason!
Will follow up via pm asap.

PS: btw, my last sentence in post #907 above was meant to be "before", not "after" each repaint, obviously.

my last post on this particular thread drift, honest!

MM, yes I was thinking about that whilst typing. Probably an extra 2min filler job before sanding and painting (IF paint flakes when removed) Probably not worth the mess of removing the transom lining, removing the screws, cutting the silicon free, etc.

J., you should really name her TARGA J40+2 or TARGA 40+2 J

:p

cheers

Nice going Jimmy. I look fwd to seeing her in the flesh in a week or 2. Many thanks for the kind transport offer but I'm ok on that score currently. See you soon
