Back to the UK for a winter refit

Nice weather you guys must have had (I was in Troon for the weekend). Did you get frostbite? :D

Silver wrap is here in my office Jimmy. Will get it parcelled up and sent tmrw, if someone @office can find a long cardboard tube!

Yeah it reminded me of helming from the flybridge during our time boating in the E Channel. Howling wind, horizontal rain, 4 layers of thermal underwear and not seeing where you're going:eek:

Pretty much - we saw 3C on Saturday, brrr. Welcome to Scotland.

How was Troon? Good progress w SD?

Aha that is fab, many thanks indeed. It's all getting tantalisingly close now, itching to put everything back together.

nice to know some places keep the balance in this planet (not sure I'd like to be there on a bike though...)
We are already deep into the sweating period, gone from duvet to sweating with a single sheet at night in less than a week. Saw up to 33C last w/e going to Athens :p

Teehee. This w/e I was trying out my latest bit of machinery: a mower with a mulching feature. No more tedious emptying of grass boxes for me.

And then I went for a stroll by the river in the sunshine wearing an ultra-lightweight Berghaus jacket, regular cotton trews and absolutely no need for arctic layers. :D

Sometimes I love your posts Vas. Other times, not so much.:)

Kev I like teasing ppl and I'm on a secret mission to help strengthening the North South divide :p
TBH heat is not always good! Polishing the stanchion bases in the garage last night (11-3am...) was like hell, must have lost a kilo in sweat, so cool weather is useful.
Having lived in the UK for a dozen yrs, I always mention to friends how living up north makes you appreciate the light and sun. We down here end up hating the sun, you up there just love it :D

cheers

Ok, someone has to ask, why were you chasing each other around Scotland on bikes? I can understand Jimmy getting a bit tetchy with his boat out of commission, so what's Mikes excuse? MiL on an extended flying visit on her broomstick?:)

It was our annual works outing, ljs. Myself and 3 other guys who work for me are bikers and we started to take a long weekend off a few years ago to do a bike tour somewhere. Since then it has grown a bit to include others and Jimmy kindly agreed to come along this year to show us how its done. We've done Wales a couple of times and Scotland 3 yrs in a row

The 3degC Jimmy refers to was because he led us up some farm track pretending to be a road to the top of some godforsaken mountain where only goats and hairy cows live

I have no excuse. Its booked well in advance and the SWMBO is simply told that I'm on essential company business that weekend:D

This is that very place. This is Mike on the road to Applecross:

Cheers Jimmy, what are you trying to say:D:D

Are you safely back home now?

Yep, easy run back in the end - timed it perfectly for my 'moving weather window' plan. Left my mum's house at 11am and was back at home in Brighton at 6pm. 30 mins of heavy rain at the beginning of the journey and then dry pretty much the whole way.

Great weekend though - 1650 miles in total. Bike needs a clean! :D

You were near Applecross? - I was kayaking last week based out of Torridon, and spent a very pleasant (but chilly) day at Applecross.
Small world! We had lunch in Shieldag just a few miles away. Jesting apart, the loop road over the top to Applecross and around the coast was the highlight of the tour as far as I'm concerned

We had dinner in Shieldag (twice) and had a great day paddling around the loch - We saw loads of groups of bikers while driving around, looked like a lot of fun (if you're waterproof)

Last year, the local guy who polished the boat in the SoF was a bit careless with the polisher, and managed to damage the 'Targa 40' lettering on both sides of the boat. This is some sort of plastic foam lettering with a vinyl finish. This damage, although minor, has bugged me since it happened so I was keen to try and resolve this during the refit.

Unfortunately this lettering is no longer available from Fairline (their supplier has ceased trading); they could supply the current style 'Targa' badge but I didn't think the current lettering style would suit my boat.

So, next plan was to try and get some stainless letters cut in the same style as the originals. At this point, forumite Petem decided he was going to offer stainless steel lettering as part of his new boaty business (see the update to his thread here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?427761-Setting-up-a-boating-business&p=5315603#post5315603), so it seemed sensible to ask him to have a go at my Targa 40 lettering.

The letters turned up this morning, so this afternoon (while it was blowing a blimmin hooley in Brighton) I had a go at sticking them to the boat.

The old letters. The two 'A's were damaged by the polisher, so we peeled the surface vinyl off to see if they could be recovered - but no joy:

First thing to do is mark up the position of the lettering:

Remove the old lettering, which (although not particularly clear on this photo) left some shading behind:

Vince from Shoreline Boats has been working on the boat for the past few days, so he just compounded the marking away:

Pete organised a fitting template - self-adhesive vinyl. This proved invaluable:

Sticking the first letter on!

In fact the template made the positioning really easy, so it only took a few mins to get the rest of the letters on:

Peel away the template, and voila:

I'm very pleased with the end result - thanks Pete:
