Can you not use the Raymarine R70011 adaptor? Then E125 will fit straight in.

Good plan, I have used them but they don't look as good as the standard surround.
 
I thought maybe we should create a thread / sticky somewhere of honest reviews of boats we have owned.

I had a T40, and there was really very little to criticise. Cracking boat, fast, comfortable etc. Nothing ever really went wrong ( but the drive did blow up 4 weeks after I sold it!) other than the usual steering rams / steering pipes.

Criticisms

- the stairs were steep into the saloon ( as my kids kept remaining me , but Jimmy has done a modification ( that I have never seen a pic of ... hint hint) to smooth his out a bit

- the plates are kept in a really useful cubby in the worktop - but if you get water on the worktop you get it in the plate store as well. This is a few hours and probably a tenner worth of bits to put a drain on it.

That was really about it. I always thought it was funny when the V39 came out that it was hailed as the future of boating .... but it is the same as the T40!

The boat before the Targa one was a Cranchi 33 Endurance. Giant speed boat. In the engine room this had a "Micro Bilge Pump" which was basically a pump with a hose on it. Boy was it useful - you could get the last drop of any water, spillage etc out of the bilge. Jimmy - as you have the thing in bits, consider putting a self priming pump above the tank as you go down to the engine room ( you can tap into other hull fittings. It won't cost much and I found it damn useful. Better than a sponge and a bucket!

On the Cranchi i used to hose out the engine room from time to time, safe in the knowledge I could get all the water out. My mate had a burst hose on a V42. I moored along side and he borrowed my hose ( to coin an expression!). Daft thing, really useful.

Mmm yes that is a glitch in the theory of man maths. If you plug SWMBO and Divorce into the man maths formula, the answer is always infinity:eek:
 
Jimmy, great to see this thread, much anticipated. Will be very interested to hear what you do to the engines now they are out, and looking forward to seeing the pics.

Did something similar ourselves with our last boat (Targa 35)...all DIY though as opposed to using a yard. My post from 2008 gives an indication of what the result will be :)

That's a great thread, thanks for posting. You've set a bit of a high bar there - but what you've done with the bilge is kinda what I've got in mind for mine. Great work. The engines looked fab as well; mine are in a worse state than yours were when they came out.
 
Thanks Jimmy. We used Danboline to paint the engine bay, which worked well but de-greasing was key.

I didn't think your engines looked too bad in the pics but then again I couldn't see all of them properly. I am guessing the salt water from your strainers has done its work then? I think that is probably what caused much of the corrosion on the front of ours. The good news is that it can be put right. Will you be changing the strainers?

Believe it or not, each and every time I discussed with a boating mate who was considering a swim platform extension (which used to be a hot topic several years ago, before built-in large platforms became the norm), I ALWAYS ended suggesting to make the extension smaller than whatever anyone was thinking.
For some reason, everybody going along this route tends to believe that the larger the better, and doesn't consider the cons of too large overhung platforms.
500mm sounds spot on for a T40, a connoisseur choice indeed! :encouragement:

Yep, it's definitely the strainers. When the D6 was first launched they were supplied with a black plastic strainer cap that was easy to cross-thread, and leaks were common. Eventually, Volvo realised that there really was a problem and designed a replacement strainer cap assembly. Once of the first things I did when I bought the boat was fit these redesigned strainer caps - but of course the damage had already been done.

I did notice on Wednesday that part of the replacement strainer cap assembly has also corroded, which is making me wonder how effective these redesigned lids are. I guess it would be possible to completely replace the entire assembly, although that might be a bit ott.

Jimmy, I did the same as you when I bought my D4 engined boat, I changed the black plastic strainer cap for the one you have with the thumb retainer screws. Volvo didn't think this through properly, because as you know you have take the thumb screws off completely (4) per cap and it is way to easy to drop these into the bilges when coming off or on. Volvo have now replace the thumb crew assembly with a quickly release assembly which looks a whole lot more sensible. I don't think you need to replace the strainers, just the cap and retainer. Sorry I don't know the part number, but if anyone does please post as I want to purchase one. Another point to not, volvo also changed the dip stick design as these again were susceptible to corrosion, the new one has a different shroud to the pull ring at the top, another think that I have changed on my D4.

Just a thought, I like the existing steering wheel on the T40 but it does look a little 1970's, straight out of a TR6 or Spitfire, would you consider changing it for one of those swanky new Issota marine wheels, perhaps to match the new upholstery. Just my 2c. ;-)

On the strainer caps, this is the current diagram off marinepartseurope.com. This doesn't show the quick release assembly that you've described - could that be a D4-only thing?
