Back to the dark side.

Hi Mike and welcome back to the dark side:) We used to have the Pearl 50 on the pontoon at Swanwick......the Pearl has gone now and we moved to Malta but if you are ever out here we have something else you both might enjoy a ride/drink on.
Afraid it's not a Sealine though......

John, how good to hear from you. How you must be missing the UK weather. Take care both and have a good season. Cheers Mike.

Regards
John

I can see the reason for many Sealines being popular boats and well done Sealine for at least attempting to market smaller boats that people could afford to start out boating .
Really admire any skipper of any F33, their boat handling skills are simply beyond comparison.:)

.

We bought our F33 when we were on the Thames - it was fine there, but SWMBO mutinied when we moved to the Solent and caught Red Jets wash for the first time. Nearly catapaulted her off the flybridge. Two months later it was swapped for a new S37 at the Boat Show. It was either that, back to the Thames or divorce. The S37 was the cheaper option!!

I had an S37 with AD41's. It wasn't a rocket ship of course, but didn't feel underpowered, 29 kts max, cruising mid twenties.

I quite fancy the relative simplicity of the AD 41's. No electronic throttles, no supercharger with computers controlling it, but just a simple and straightforward turbo diesel. I loved the TAMD74P's we had on the S48 - similar in some ways. Wasn't the AD41 one of Volvos most successful engines, with a production span of some 19 years.
Cruising lower 20's would be fine for us.

Hi John,

I was just wondering what Malta is like over the winter period ? We had a look at Gibraltar at Christmas, and though the weather was wonderful but the area was a bit built up for us with heavy industry in GiB bay and a lot of high rise council flats on the rock; too urban IMO for a good Med retirement location.

Do the Maltese speak fluent English , or only as a second language?

OK, SWMBO has given sailing a shot, but after years of mobos, she hates it. So, we are coming back to the dark side, though must sell our lovely Gibsea 33 first. Really fancy an S37 again - not in a position to go for an S48 or similar, even though we loved our last one. Kids inheritance? Pah!!

I've seen this before and we nearly went through it but something at the last minute stopped us changing - Ah yes hearing about Lehman brothers collapse on the evening news.

We've chartered a yacht and sailed in pals but my soul mate doesn't like the cramped dark accommodation on a sail yacht compared to a motor yacht. :) Even on 50ft yachts the master cabin was akin to a dog box size and dark inside like a coffin.

When I was there in November I didn't come across anyone who couldn't speak English. Maybe in some remote areas they don't, but I didn't encounter it.

Thanks. :)

The island looks very pretty in photos, much nicer than the Costa's, but it seems to be a bit remote just off north Africa. I bought a travel guide and there seems to be plenty of interesting historical sights to visit , and lovely beaches for the youth to laze around on. Lol.

Is it true that there is a very windy and wet winter weather .

We had nice weather 20-22C and sunny, however I don't know if that is representative. Forumite Poweryachtblog is your man for all things Malta.
