Hi,

Can anybody recommend a baby lifejacket for a 6 month old baby.

We are not going far as he is too young, but if the weather is good over Easter it would be nice to go for a short cruise up the Hamble. Even though it is only the river and he will be in the cabin, I don't want to go without a lifejacket for him.

Andy.

Try Crewsaver, I had one that worked at 9 months thru to age 5.

not possible at that age

Crewsaver do a "floatation cot", but lifejacket wearing starts with toddlerhood.

When our last one was 6 months we took him sailing because the Crewsaver cot was ninety quid and, heartless parents that we are, we said we could soon make another one if he drowned. Now he is two and a bit and represents a bigger parental investment he wears a lifejacket and harness.

I still recommend Crewsaver for when the infant is slightly bigger; their toddler lifejackets are excellent and offer some useful padding.

The only thing really suitable from new born is the "safety crib" - which is a complete rip-off at £90. We got one for our first season with the baby (which covered his age 0-6 months) but of course we didn't even get it out of it's plastic bag.

A number of the manufacturers do child-size lifejackets which they claim are suitable from very young - one of those may be appropriate and they have the advantage that they are much cheaper and last longer.

But to be totally honest - I am not really sure you need one for pottering round the Solent area.

Hi,

Your probably right, we are only going up the Hamble and into Southampton water. He is quite big for a 6 month old (wife feeds him a lot) so he may fit into one of the other type of lifejackets, I will have a look on the web.

I thought there was a new one advertised in PBO this month, but I can't find my magazine.

Try compass - who can be accessed from somewhere on this site - they do two or three small ones.

Don't tell my wife, but I find it hard to envisage circumstances in which a lifejacket will save the life of a pre-toddler.

There are several in the childrens lifejackets section on this site. These seem to start at about 44lbs.

My main concern when my daughter was small was having sufficient buoyancy on her, if she was dropped/fell in, just to keep her afloat long enough to be pulled out. She's 8 now and never gone in unintentionally, everything else has - buggy, bag, toys etc - I think we put the buoyancy on the wrong things.

Hi All,

I bought a new Baltic Bambi Super Soft, which is a brand new baby lifejacket. It fits from 3kg-15kg, so basically from birth to about 3 I think. The price was £37.99, which is quite good compared to the Crewsaver cot.

They have only just come out so they may not be in many shops yet. But have a look at http://www.balticlifejackets.com/product.asp?prod_id=105&lang=eng

Anyway it gives peace of mind to have one on board.

Thanks again for the help.

Hello - we were recently in the same position (6 month year old) and I bought a baby lifejacket at the London Boat Show. Since then I have read a report of a new lifejacket for babies by Helly Hanson - about £40 and a special "keeled" design, based on tests with a lifelike model they nicknamed Bambi.

My interest was sparked when they had a PR event to which journalists were invited where they threw the bambibaby in the water with competitors lifejackets on - most landed and remained face down. The HH new design righted the baby and has a special one piece collar to keep the head above water.

If I wre in the same position again I'd probably get the HH model.

The new Helly Hansen is the DBs you pay a bit more for it but they are worth it.

Hi,

I looked at the Helly Hansen last night on the website and it looks identical to the Baltic which I bought yesterday afternoon, same foam keel at the front and one piece collar. I am only guessing, but the two designs look like they are shared and both jackets were released around the same time.

They are also about the same price.
