I'm looking to buy some light weight grey awning material to extend current awning and to make shades for new areas of the boat, anyone got any ideas where I can get such material at a good price? I am also considering buying in bulk from China or India using what I need and selling on the remainder, would anyone be interested in buying the surplus do you think? ali

We buy almost all our materials from Abakhan. They are very convenient for us in North Wales although their main shop is in Manchester. You really need to visit to find what you want. Our awning material is canvas, bought at a very low cost from the part rolls/offcuts section. To compare, all the on-line specialist suppliers like Kayospruce, Point North, Martex charge roughly £10 - 14 per metre for awning materials. We paid £1.50 for ours.

what weight of canvas do you need for awnings/sail covers and things and is there any special requirement for UV resistance etc ?

I can't quote a weight as we bought ours as seen. We went for the heaviest we could get to avoid flapping in typical Mediterranean afternoon winds, similar in weight to our hood material. Ours is totally non-synthetic canvas intended as the base for oil paintings. The intention was to use it to develop the design - that was in 2005 and it's still working well. It has shrunk slightly due to dew when left up overnight but we take it down in the rain. I cannot imagine that it has any special UV properties but has seen more than its fair share of sunshine.

Photo shows it in the early stages - the poles then were pvc pipe, since replaced by fibreglass tent poles.
