From the main manufacturers of the AWB can you please rank in order which is perceived to be best and which is considered worse.

I would rank : 1. Hanse, 2. Jeanneau 3. Beneteau 4. Bavaria.

I promise I am not trying to start a row here, I am just bemused with some peoples perceptions of which mark should be at the top.

Many thanks.

I would agree with you....

Isn't the issue that perception doesn't necessarily equal reality?
Exactly. Pointless exercise. There is very little difference except that they all try to be different. Just the same as VW, Ford, Toyota and so on.

How do you choose? Just the same way as you choose any other consumer product. Decide what you want out of your purchase, look at what is available - and just choose.

You may, of course ignore that process and just buy on perceived "reputation". Biggest difference with boats compared with most consumer products is that few people are serial purchasers so don't have the experience of different brands long term to form their own opinions.

Presumably you are listing the worst first?

didn't consider Dufour.

They are listed IMHO as best first.

And I do not consider Dehler to be an AWB.

Just my opinion though.

Beneteau and Jeanneau, are part of the same industrial group and Jeanneau and Beneteau models although looking different on deck are sometimes built on a common hull.

Depends what you want to use it for as some of these boats can have different strengths.

Strongest sailing performance?

Highest volume for length?

Best looking?

Best deal and residuals?

I thought the A was for average.

Am i being naive ( again) ?

No, you are right. There is little overall to choose between them. Does not mean they are all exactly the same, just that when you add up the pros and cons of all the attributes you are looking at, they all end up looking much the same.

So the choice depends on the weight you personally put on each attribute.

To me the final test is when I sit in the boat either on deck or below (having crawled all over it), I ask the question - would I feel proud to own this in the knowledge that I can pay for it? Still feel the same about my boat 10 years on, despite being tempted by others on the way. Pride reinforced by a recent photo taken of me sailing her with Old Harry as a backdrop. Now framed and in the lounge - think it really captures what my boating is about.
