One half of the dinghy is slow to deflate when the valve is set in the exhaust mode,I think it is sticking . How do I strip the valve from the boat to service it.?
Does the valve have a large nut on the outside, a plunger with a cross inside of the valve? if it does this is an A7 valve for which there are spares kits available, if not it sounds like an older valve it may need replacing but try putting some hot soapy water in there - might stop it sticking, I wouldnt put any thing that is likly to damage the diaphram in the valve as one of the posts here suggests.
I also have an old redcrest with leaky valves. Does anyone know if it's worth getting the valves replaced professionally with newer ones, or is it too expensive.
With the older type of valve, it was OK to stick something in. Indeed, Avon provided prongs for just that purpose. As you say, that is not a good idea with the 'newer' type, introduced about 20 years ago, which screws down and catches open. I've had one fail because the catch has gone so the valve won't hold open, another where the spring has gone, so it won't shut. Its easy (or it used to be) and not too expensive to get a replacement fitted.
The valve has a large nut and centre stem as you describe. I think the stem is not
lifting the valve properly. Is it possible to undo the nut and dismantle the valve without removing the mounting "patch" from the airtube.
