i was under the impression the wind farms had to be avoided at all costs or be hauled in by the harwich coast guard ?
reading around here it seems we can sail through them (safely)
anyone care to comment ?

Why would you steer around? The only imperative is to avoid the uprights. The blades are far above all but the tallest superyacht masthead.

There was only an exclusion zone whilst being constructed. As far as I know, you can skim past them at your leisure now..... If that's your bag of course.

Guard boat was warning off people attempting Foulgers Gat yesterday but allowing through boats already in passage through the Gat with a polite reminder not to do so. I bottled it and went for Fishermans Gat!

Unless things have changed very recently passage through Foulgers Gat is permitted, although not reccommended, provided you keep more than 50m away from the piles and 500m away from any wind farm construction vessels.

When I passed through a couple of weeks back the guard boat was doing its best to discourage boats from using Foulgers but stopped short of saying that the Gat was closed to navigation

Where on earth did you get this from??
You may certainly sail through windfarms. Completed ones simply have a 50m exclusion zone around each tower. Those under construction have different rules, usually 200m around any active works.
Even if there is a Harwich CG, they certainly don't have a boat and anyway the CG never does anything like that, they are Search and Rescue only, not policemen.
The buoyage has been removed at each end of Foulgers Gat (i.e. the Long Sand Inner and Outer buoys) but the navigation is NOT closed and nobody has any right to deny you passage through.
