Just picked up an old Autohelm 5000 with the linea drive, from Ebay. Whilst Im awaiting its arrival I have been looking around in the various lockers adjacent to the steering quadrant and come to the conclusion that it would be much easier to instal it on the stbd side rather than the port side,( which I think is the normal installation).

Does anyone know if the installation can be reversed?? Anyone got their dive unit on the stbd side??

Many tks Nick

You can get the manual from here

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.raymarine.com/raymarine/SubmittedFiles/Handbooks/Legacy_Handbooks/Autopilot/AH5000Analog.pdf>http://www.raymarine.com/raymarine/SubmittedFiles/Handbooks/Legacy_Handbooks/Autopilot/AH5000Analog.pdf</A>

Hopefully it will explain all.

We have an Autohelm linear drive on the starboard side - linear drive is mounted forward of the stock (ie driving end facing aft, fixed end facing forward), to starboard and the driving end directly connected to the stock by a tiller bar.

I do not know of any particular setting required for that and have just assumed that the position is managed by the rudder reference transducer, the presence of and installation of which is a mandatory requirement as far as I am aware. The sense of the transducer can be changed simply by swapping the connection of the two wires from it (but don't ask me which way for which way /forums/images/icons/smile.gif).

Yes, it can be mounted pointing Port, Starboard, Forward or Aft. It can also be mounted either way up.

Thanks to you and the other replies on this one...However what I would like to know is how the drive unit compensates for being mounted around the otherway? Is there a switch, or does one have to wire it up the opposite way around!?

Its rather like a tiller pilot, isn't it, and the ones I've owned in the past always had to be mounted on the correct side or they worked the wrong way around.

Also.... Reading the very good downloadable manual. It states that the linea drive must be limited buy the boats own rudder stops rather that the units own limits. Given that this thing produces 560lbs of thrust even my massive rudder stops are going to fail pretty quick.. Is there somesort of sensing device..?

Thanks again.. Nick
