I was asked yesterday to splice some anchor chain to 12mm multiplait rope (with a core). I couldnt do the normal splice as this rope has a core, can this type of rope be spliced to chain? The problem is the join needs to go through the pipe on the windlass and it is quite tight.

splice

this one is easy to do, mark rope back about 2 feet, dig through the outer layers, and dig out the core, pull out from end to mark. Then insert a needle with a hook at the end a bit of wire will do as well, insert at mark and push towards the end, halfway there bring the hook out, attach end of the rope and pull back through to mark. This will leave you a loop to attach your shackle to. Fix loop to gate post, and rope to car, and pull it you will find it will not slip. Or you could try it around your neck stand on stool and jump. LOL

OR YOU COULD DO IT THIS WAY

You seem to be describing braided cored rope, rather than multiplait anchor rope, which does not have a core. Cored rope is not suitable for anchor warps. You can use either 3 strand (usually nylon) or anchorplait, both of which can be spliced in line with chain so that it will go over the windlass gypsy and through the pipe.

For instructions goto www.jimmygreenmarine.co.uk look under technical advice and you will find lots of useful information including instructions on chain rope splices.
