I was intrigued to listen to Kass Schmidt at the PBO/Beaulieu 'Meet The Experts' forum last Sunday, when she detailed some of the prep'ing she'd done for her entry in the 2017 OSTAR - a race in which just 7 of 21 starters completed, due largely to a severe Atlantic storm. She was intrigued to learn that Michael Ellison, a successful competitor in the 1964 OSTAR with Hasler and Ritchie, was sitting in the AYRS stand, as usual, just 100 metres away..... and that the 'Jesters', in Under 30' Boats, had been thrashing their way down to Terceira/Azores at the same time last year, through much the same huge Atlantic storm as their more expensive sisters.

"Seventeen gales in nineteen days..."

The 'Jesters' community do not, of course, actually 'race', so they avoid all the razzmatazz and marketing hype of the 'branded' operation, and have none of the Rules and Regulations and sponsorship obligations. "One man, one boat, the sea" as Blondie Hasler put it.

Readers should note that the 'Jesters', in Under 30' Boats, start from Plymouth on 7 May, on this year's 'Jester Atlantic Challenge' to Newport, RI.

It's the same Tamar River SC which is hosting them again this year in our 'Jester Village' - and the beer's cheap. Wish 'em fair winds.....
