At £1.50/litre for diesel does the industry have any future..?

Haha. That brought back a few memories /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I once prepared a set of accounts for a building firm ... they had no "outside" jobs on that year ... the only thing they did was a refurb to the company premises ... but to make it "look good" they turned the refurb job into a sale for the company and the cost went against cost of sales ..

Its easy enough to do some creative accountancy to make the company look better than it really is...

Paul,

What I find strange, more then anything, is that people have known this was coming and have apparently not adapted there behavior so as to "cut their cloth". You and I exchanged views on this way back - see here: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/586379/page/3/fpart/1/vc/1 and more specifically our discussion regarding boat values falling etc (see about the eigth post from the top). Frankly this argument should have been done and dusted at that time and if people are only now realising what the impact will be come next november then frankly - they need to be more aware. Granted the fuel price rise is somewhat compounding the situation but nevertheless the writing has been on the wall for long enough. You may recall that I sold my Targa back in 2004 and have gone to a displacement motorboat with a rag and stick as a bonus. I encourage other mobo'ers to give it a try - they might find they like it! Much better (surely) than packing in boating completely.

Yes - what you write is sadly true.
Most of my friends around me have reacted already but there are many out there who seem to want to wait until they actually pay treble the price at the pump.

For a larger motor crusier a round trip to Padstow (80 miles each way) would cost more in fuel than it does to have a dcent holiday for a few weeks in a pretty nice place overseas (£2000). Many will judge the cost not worth it and they will be out.
Already mobo prices have dropped.
Already overseas customers who cruise here have declared they will not do so after November 2008
yest some still cling to the denuial approach .... amazing!

Since when has boating been about value for money anyway? Perhaps we should all take up walking in the park. Much cheaper. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Have you thought that maybe the argument is done and dusted already and people have concluded that it will not stop them boating? The red diesel issue has been around for maybe 2 years and there can't be many boaters who don't know about it. Are you really suggesting that people who are canny enough to put themselves in a financial position to be able to afford a boat are so stupid as to ignore the impending rise in fuel costs?
In stock market parlance, IMHO the market has already discounted the red diesel issue

I'm not suggesting that anybody is stupid; please don't put words in my mouth.

Perhaps it is already done and dusted - if so, why all the hand-wringing on here?

rob

Maybe you have so much cash that £2k for an 160 mile round trip is acceptable to you. I am simply suggesting that to the average boat owner I would suggest that it is an untenable level of cost.

rob

Well - if that is trebble the current cost you're still talking £700 for the trip at todays prices ... that is nearly 10 times the amount we spend on fuel in a year !!

IMHO the market has not fully discounted the red issue.

There are still many boats on the market that will never sell at anywhere near the asking price - whilst that is often the case in past years, the amount and extent of it seems greater today than it has ever been. I know people who want to sell to change over to sail and simply cannot get anywhere near what they paid for the boat. There is a tendency for some to sit there dazzled by the headlights as they get run over /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Boating has never been a great value for money pastime but that does not mean that it will always stay unchanged no matter what the cost ....... there are trigger points which stop people spending on boating and no matter how well off they are many will choose not to spend.

I wonder if there will be an increase in the Charter market? Especially over seas - why spend £2000 on 160 mile trip when you could pickup a charter boat for a week for only double that ... without having to pay for fuel!

The inference you were drawing was that people were in denial about the red diesel issue which, if you are right, requires a certain level of stupidity IMHO. My point is that I don't think people are that stupid
As for 'hand wringing', there are certain people with a point to make on this forum and will make that point ad nauseam whatever anyone else says. The fact is that the motor boat industry will not collapse because diesel costs £1/litre and for evidence of that, you only have to look elsewhere in Europe where motorboating is alive and kicking with fuel prices close to this figure

Think this one of the arguments that will go on and on and on and on............
Will will all have to wait and see what really happens. Perhaps in a few years time all there will be is loads of sail boats and lots of small petrol boats.

All the diesel boats will be sitting with brokers waiting to be sold.

Ho hum.

Called in dinner time and filled up the car, normally just put diesel gun in and wait for it to stop, around £35. Today stood there and watched the pounds going up faster than the litres, today cost £43. That was a shock, going from £30 to £40 is something you notice.
I think we will have the same with red, when someone goes to fill up, 1000 litres, was £450, ticks up £1,500.
It's that £1000 at the pump that's going to ram it home, but in most cases I not till that day.

Brian

Brian,

I agree fully with you. People do not know how much it hurts until they see it and experience it. I remember buying a 4X4 cheap because it only did 17 miles to the gallon. I thought no problem. After 9 months filling it up I sold her!

We think we understand, but that is just perception. When we actually see it, we then finally understand!

Red diesel loss will hurt!
