Asking Price vs. Cost of Work

I'd say mrming's analysis is about spot on. Older boats I'd now always be looking for the original engine to have been replaced at some point...

My 55 year old Twister has had three engines during her long life. The newest, a BUKH DV10, was installed 40 years ago. It starts instantly, burns no oil, and makes no smoke or steam.

I have no reason to consider replacing it but I am well aware that any potential buyer is more than likely to ignore my reassurances and to factor in the cost of a new engine when deciding on his/her offer.

My reaction is that if genoa is shot then standing rigging is overdue for replacement and main probably on its way out - so thats maybe £4k

And once you start looking at poorly maintained boat I would fear for the engine, plus I doubt that expensive electronics such as chart plotter and radio are up to current standards. Both these last 2 items have vastly improved in the last 10 years so even a good condition boat may benefit from their upgrade.

Walk away !
