I was gobsmacked yesterday on my way back from Lymington to Portsmouth.

A huge stinky was making it's way down the Solent making the normal QE2 style wash when he slowed right up and started to idle along. I was confused for a while till I saw a small lugger with a young couple in it making their way in towards Cowes. As soon as they were clear, the stinky powered up and was gone.

So, if you drive a big blue stinky and are the culprit, hats off to you sir.

And, if you are the couple in the lugger, shame on you for not even acknowledging this and thanking them.

I think I am coming close to resting my case. Even when powerboaters do show consideration for sailboaters it is rarely that the act of consideration is acknowledged.

Anyway, well done to the powerboater, nice to know that he did have the courtesy and consideration to slow down, even if it was not appreciated.

I've posted my views on this subject before. It's not what you sail that counts, it's the person at the helm, tiller or throttle, that makes the difference.
Arrogance and ignorance, and that it what it is my friends, is alive and well and living in all our boating communities, no sector is exempt.
I have seen powerboats risk almost certain disaster together and also sailboats refuse to give way to each other too, so why is it a matter of pride or contention that we continue to blame each 'en masse' for the shortfalls in our respective communities??
Even on 'Old Father Thames' similar problems exist. Cruisers pass scullers, kicking up a huge wash at 4 knots, completely oblivious of the peril they are causing. Similarly, slow down to tick-over or even neutral in a cruiser and you won't generally get so much as a breathless 'thank you' for your trouble, just a sullen stare.
What we all need is consideration, not confrontation. Prejudice, by type of chosen craft is absurd. Sailboats need more room than powerboats in an open seaway, powerboats, likewise, need a few minutes to cool down their engines upon entering a Marina after a fast run.
For the sake of everybody's own blood pressure, tranquility or simple enjoyment, we all have to learn tolerance and accept that it is different strokes for different folks.
Let's all enjoy the water this year, Please.

Peter.

I totally agree with the sentiment of your post. Unfortunatly its easy to say, but much harder for the masses to put into practice. Take last weekend, the whole family decided (well me really) spend the weekend down in poole. Great time, weather greatish, all going well until monday. Typical stinkie thing, engine probs! Well thinking "its ok, I got the outboard to get us home". So pottering up the Wareham channel, a raggie come past kicking up a wash! tells me I need a tow. I say thanks, but we'll be ok as were just going up the river a bit, but thanks anyway. The bloody look I got, as if I just thrown abuse at him. All I said was "No thanks, but tanks for asking" You just cant win!

Wha'dya mean "I'm always playing with this engine" its the only way to get it to run!

Can we please stop all this raggie v stinky bullshit, it's beggining to wear me down, it's a load of crap afterall!! We have arseholes everywhere, can't we all agree to attack the government or something? Why do the British always have to attack each other, can't we just live alongside each other with tolerance, find something worthwhile to argue about and change, like the environment! So our children have something of this world left or stopping half the world dying of Aids or starvation? All this "he didn't slow down" is pathetic, really! IMHO of course!!
