Can it be done? We have a yacht (Steel cruising ketch, Colin Archer 42) currently being advertised in YM May 2004 pg.158. She is lying in Singapore.

It is a reluctant sale and we are keen to look at all our options including bringing her back to UK waters. Is there anyone out there (family, group of friends, adventurous sorts) who want to take up such a challenge. If there are how do we sort out necessary paperwork/legalities?

How would such things stack up financially? Does anyone know of this being done. In effect I presume the boat would be chartered to private individuals who would lease her for the duration of the journey. They would get passage, experience and a fantastic voyage and we would get our boat back home.

I have investigated shipping or professional costs to do something similar but we would simply need a second mortgage!

Can anyone advise??

Sophie

Have you seriously looked at deck cargo? It is not that expensive a way of shipping a boat. What about sailing it yourself?

In 1994 I had my 30 footer shipped as deck cargo from Hong Kong to Algeciras in Spain by a company called Yacht Shipping. It all went smootlhy and the boat arrived in two weeks in perfect condition. It wasn't exactly cheap but definitely worth it and I should think that from Singapore it should be cheaper.

in 2002 i was quoted US25,000 to ship a 40 footer from guadeloupe to UK!

to help you out, though i don't have the time to take on a trip like that, if i were considering it i would want a detailed report on the boat's condition and inventory before setting out half way round the world so you could save yourself a lot of hassle by preparing for that.

on the legal side, you need to protect yourself against misappropriation, damage or sinking etc. and against claims for death or injury resulting from defects in the boat. i suggest it's worth paying a lawyer to draw up a contract.

The passage from the far east is far less appealing than the other half of the circumnavigation and you are saving maybe £20,000 in delivery charges so i think you'd need to offer some financial sweetener like air fares. on the other hand you may strike lucky and get it done for nothing.
