I remember reading about a chap who was sailing round the U.K. single handed. After a period of about 6 days he decided to have a night ashore.

After a period of about 4 hours, being ashore made him feel so disheartened that he went back to sea . He then felt fine again.

The trouble with single handers I think is that we should 'put ourselves about a bit' more than we do.

But there again, we get so attached to our little ship's that they tend to provide all the company we want.

Yes , we are sad gits.

Now that's really rattled my cage! Don't give her ideas. You thought Baroness Margaret was bad - you ain't seen NOTHIN' ! She took spin lessons from the Princess (Tony) but has now taken over from him and opened her own school. I'd love to have her on my crew - good bait for shark-fishing (they are cannibals, aren't they?) 2nd thoughts - she'd prob eat them.

I've done some singlehanding.
I'm definetely no hero.
Sad? - very rarely.
I looked in my Webster's, - no 'git' - what is IT? Him/her?
Also: I keep seeing IMHO on this forum what does THAT
stand for?

That sums it up for me as well.
I have taken friends out for day sails, but they normaly end up laying down feeling ill. Even on days when there is hardly enough wind to move the boat.

I'd never given this much thought before until I took the boat single handed across the channel this year - my wife was to join me a week later.

On the first night I got into conversation with the boat alongside and we got around to comparing our passages from Portsmouth. When I mentioned I had sailed across single handed it prompted the immediate response 'Oh, you're one of those are you'

Peter,
git is a contraction of illigitemate, in other words a mild swearword = bastard. I think if you're going to keep using this bulletin board you'll have to dump the Websters and buy an English English dictionary!

Sad heros IMHO. Single handing in my case is because Mrs O'H no longer enjoys sailing due to a severely arthritic knee, making it very difficult for her to get aboard, and to cope with the nicities of the 'facilities' in a seaway for example. Not to mention the companionway steps.

So every so often I am 'released' to get out there on my own. So thats the 'sad' bit

She did enjoy the Tall Ships at Portsmouth last weekend though - quite like old times to have her back aboard again.
But she was a real 'hero' to manage to struggle aboard to join me that day! She is still recovering.....

Interesting about the arthritis - saw a boat coming into Cartagena last April, couple crewing and the lady was scarcely able to walk to the bows to hand the rope to those on the pontoon, because of severe arthritis.
I have to say mine was a feeling of admiration rather than pity!!!

Your wife has my sincere sympathy. My dad (mid 70s) has this form of arthritis and it's extremely painful and disabling to an otherwise fit person, I know. Maybe you could get her back aboard by sailing something estuarial with no bridge deck, as beloved of French sailors. ;-)
