Hi all.

I am thinking of maybe having a couple of seasons on the Thames as a change from being based at Poole.

I am completely out-of-date with the BSS so a couple of pointers would be handy. We only have a sea toilet at the moment so I guess a holding tank is a necessity? The boat is MCA coded so I am hopeful that there would be little else to do to get her through (she is an 11m Rodman flybridge by the way) but any tips would be useful.

Also how far up does air draft become an issue? We live near Wargrave so thinking about a berth there or somewhere nearby (any comments on marinas would also be helpful).

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks.

If I could get the stupid attachments system to work i would post a photograph!!

Hi Simon, apart from Hammersmith bridge where you just need to watch the tidal height your first "problem" would be Windsor and the second Cookham, that's assuming you are motoring round. If you are lifting in to Reading, say then Cookham is the downstream problem and Clifton Hamden your upstream one. If your radar arch folds down then you will probably be ok anyway, I think Cookham is about 12' 4" from memory.

I'm sure there are people on here with more accurate information.

Good luck
Ian

On the TMBA website - www.tmba.org.uk - there are links to the BSS site, bridge heights, and loads of other stuff you will find useful - see the menus down the RHS of the page. Don't know how old your boat is but don't assume everything should be ok! I always think its a good idea to get an examiner to actually advise you on what needs doing - you will find a list on the BSS site.

See above re bridge heights etc. I'm sure many here will have their own recommendations but we have had excellent experience at all 3 MDL marinas - Bray, Windsor and Penton Hook.

Hope to welcome you as a member of the TMBA (well, I mean, I would, wouldn't I !!!) :D
