Nobody hurt. See here.

Blimey!
I saw a rib like that on that day and watched them for a mo whilst driving down to Menai Bridge!

Approaching The Cardinal from the West.

I thought it was the Guys from Indefatigable ( Training for white water rescue goes on from there) who train in the Straits regularly.

Well, I thought it was them so I gave no heed.

Could have been someone else though.
I did not stop, just slowed down a little
Twas too far to indentify for certain

Weird angle of dangle for the rib to be positioned
The tide is still making and the painter looks to be attached to the Cardinal maybe.
Never seen owt like that there before:eek:

Actually it was the boys from the Merseyside Fire and Rescue on a boat handling exercise.

3 rescued from the water by the Beaumaris RNLI. Insider info says it was there own boat with their own trainer...

I reckon the painter is being pulled by the water, but can't understand how the inflatable is staying put at that angle, strange place innit!

I thought tide was falling too Tom, high water was at 12.19. But I know it does a bit of coming and going so Kwackers is probably right, again! ;)

'Predicted' HW Menai Bridge on the day was 13.00.
However I was on the day at Siliwen boat yard (near Bangor) at 13.40 when high water actually occured!
The water reached me mates shed door on the beach
Wasn't supposed to!
Not for the 'predicted' height.

Anyway, went home over tother bridge so missed the rampant rib!

But apart from that.
If the bit of the Cardinal was wet just above the waterline, it would be going out.

Don't forget the water flows that way about 1.1/2 hours before HW Menai Bridge.
And continues to ebb in the same direction

Because of the nature of the 'Canal' atmospheric pressure and wind direction seem to have more than an effect than more 'normal' places!

Most noticeably on Springs obviously.

Any East in the wind and the HW water prediction makes the actual height achieved greater than predicted.
The 'Northern' (Puffin) end has a stronger flow on the flood , 'takes over' at about 2 hours ish before HW , than the flood at tother end.
Thats why it all goes West.
Simple really;)

Predicted HW 12.19, Hactual HW 13.40, the place gets dafter and dafter!
Remind me to chuck me tide tables tomorra!

With due deference to Kwacker, I wouldn't bother with predictions for the swellies themselves:

Find HW Liverpool - which was ~13:30 on the day in question.

Swelies are *slack* 2 hrs before HW Liverpool, so that would have been ~11:30 on the day in question.

Photo taken sometime about 14:00? That's 2 1/2 hours after slack.

I still struggle with whether it's the flood or the ebb. Sometimes there's water flowing into both ends at the same time or flowing out of both ends at the same time and then it's easy, but there are sometimes where it just depends which direction you're looking in.

Kinnel, I,ve been bouncing off rocks in the Place for nigh on 30 years
Still bites me bum occasionally:eek:

Tiss unique
Had loads of advice and instruction and some Fairy Tales off Locals over the Years.

Still workin on it!
Tiss one heck of a place.

Out there tomorrow at 09.30 hours, will learn something new again no doubt.
Out again later.
30 kts through the Swellies in the dark will be good fun.
At 1 hour before low water.
Well, unless the Sea God of the swellies pulls the plug earlier:eek:

I was always taught to pass the downstream side of an obstruction or moored boat. Do you think they forgot, seriously missjudged it, or were just trying to show off?

Good place for swift water recue training, I did my BCU senior Instructor training there. A bit worrying that the rescuers needed rescueing tho'.

Do those who don't know the area now understand why we treat it with respect - or suffer the consequences?

HW on the day was 13.00

Slack water was 11.30

This is why this area is confusing as the slack water is only when the water from both ends are pouring in at the same rate, it then stops coming in over the bar and starts to flow in the other direction still rising for approx another 1.30-2.30 hrs. It dose'nt stop flowing in that direction until it's time for the tide to come back over the bar, when it confuses us all once again!

I use the 2hrs before HW Liverpool as my timing for the area. Once you have sorted out what happens with the tide in this area the only other problem is the sticky up bits ?? but Kwacker knows all of them.... by personal touch so to speak!

Tom

Yeah, whatever. If I don't hit a rock I consider it a good day.
