I have a 42ft, 10 tonne, Moody and we buddied up with some friends, with a near identical Moody, for a summer of cruising in the Med which included some very bumpy nights at anchor.

I was using (and still am) a 25kg Rocna and they had either a 20 or 25kg Manson. Both performed equally well, digging in and staying in. Based on these observations, I consider the Manson a good anchor and am surprised at your experience.

I have never used a Bruce, my previous anchor, for many years, was a CQR. Without wishing to start another anchor war, I would not change back, the performance of the Rocna is so outstandingly better.

In your situation I would email Manson and ask for their opinion and advice on your problems.

Addressing this to Ifraser, the original poster, I am interested in your conclusions? I have a 20kg Manson Supreme with 10mm cable on a 15T, 50 foot sloop. This is slightly lighter than the manufacturer-recommended sizing, and like you, I have found the anchor difficult to set. However, this includes in the lightest conditions where the anchor has dragged several times when trying to set requiring haul-up and re-setting . As you have commented, in light conditions, with controlled slow speed when trying to set, this should not be due to the light weight of the anchor. I have experienced this at Studland, and other sandy/muddy sea beds, using scope of 4-6 x depth. I previously used a correctly-sized Delta with 95% success rate over 10 years on a 40 footer and before that a 35 pound CQR on a 35 footer with no more than 50% success (on first setting attempt with astern revs etc)! I am reluctant to replace the Manson with merely a heavier one, given my experience, and am interested in whether you came to any conclusions. I am veering (sorry!) towards a 32kg Delta.

We have a 17kg Supreme on our ?5 ton Rival 32. Sets every time (including this summer in Studland) and only dragged once, and that was 100% our fault. We hand control with clutch on Lofrans manual windlass.

Re light winds. IIRC Panope noted that the Supreme sits statically with the tip just off the ground. I wonder if there is something about yours that is, as you pull back, stopping the little rotation necessary to turn the tip in to the ground?

Do us and yourself a favour - its the weekend soon. pull you anchor and rode on deck and take a picture (or number of pictures) and post. We need to see the whole anchor and the rode attached.

Most people have no problem with a Supreme, it was awarded Super High Holding capacity by Lloyds, its done well in most independent tests, the forum members here have largely, or totally, been happy.
