hey guys, a while back but never really said hello so here it goes "hello" ;)

My mate who is 23 has been working on the railway since he was 9 as an engineer. He is now looking to move into the marine industry working in a marina, on a ship, or docks, anywhere he can! on the south coast. Can anyone help him out? thanks :D

Since he was 9?! Puts a new meaning on 'Virgin trains' doesn't it?

He need to be here, and making himself known if he wants to get in on the marine industry - lots of people wanting work, few vacancies. Usual story these days, but good luck anyway.

Not coast, but on the water.

London, River Thames. Ferry and tourist boat skippers definitely needed. 6 month training given. Oppo of mine due to start shortly, Desperately short of people. Its not often in the boaty stuff that a branch is so under staffed.

Tell him to Join the merchant navy! Find a company to sponsor him they pay for his uni course and he works for them for 2 years. That's the deal. :)

Slimrick, had a chat and he recommends any internet search for the companies that operate ferries and tourist boats on the Thames. he was a little coy (understandably) about an offer he has had but reitterated about the lack of staff.

Similarly, the offshore work on vessels maintaining windfarms is short of people, an alternative he looked at using google. Research will pay off.

Hope this helps. CS

Thanks for your reply's chaps. I have shown him the link to this page and he has greatly appreciated it. The tourist boats on the Thames looks good but is a little far to travel, however its his plan B. As for the big ferry company's, he has applied for a few jobs for them, i wish him luck and thank you all :)
