Looks ancient cos it is but once again everything moving with the touch of a (rather large) feather.

But I always get this bit wrong, pics below are of the the gears "centered" . Then put back together the paddle wasn't quite in line, pointing slight off.

So moved the gears so the paddle cog teeth are "one over" on the vane cog. Vague memories of never getting this bit right first time, has anyone some nice pics of the gears meshed on a working one?

Apart from that this should last pretty much forever, one thing on the boat I really really wouldn't want to cross an ocean without ?
TIA

You must be well on with your repairs if you're at the stage of refitting self steering?
Keep forgetting just how long it takes to do all the little bits, could be last time I can get in the forepeak for a good few months after launching. That's what usually happens ?
Toughest little boat there is now though, no need to go near civilization for a good few years hopefully, got stainless welding rods & welder. a load of dyneema & little bit epoxy. Fix anything with those in the anchorage far away ?

Edit: Oh that familiar & reassuring smell of sheep ??

I have exactly the same vane steering system (in my garage) that you have, however, I am away at the moment and will not be returning to the UK until later in January. I am happy to send you some pictures when I am back if you can wait that long! I also have a full instruction manual and original fitting instructions.

It's not a big deal remeshing the gears if it's wrong afloat, doesn't take long. but thanks.

Deeply satisfying having it running so freely again. ?

4 autopilots onboard now - is that too much?? ??
Aries, utter rubbish st2000 & couple of pypilots when I finish building them.

Solo a long long way from land and no self steering really isn't something you want to experience..
