We placed our order through one of the guys staffing the Raymarine stand at LBS and were required to pay with order. Discovered today he has gone bust and I have potentially lost £3K.

Waiting to see if Raymarine will accept any moral responsibility (if not legal) for employing a contractor on the stand who must have been several thousands of pounds overdue on what he owed them, let alone anyone else.

Contractor is Waypoint-1 Ltd - now in receivership

Do the decent thing Raymarine (UK) , PLEASE!

[edited to add: To save new readers scrolling right through to end of the thread, RM have offered a substantial discount on replacement kit and explained that the compnay was in good financial standing with them and had been for many years so they had no idea this was going to happen. Seems reasonable!]

I would have thought that using the Raymarine stand as a retailing platform did leave them with some sort of moral responsibility. And don't forget, £3k at retail prices is not as much at cost - assuming it was all Raymarine kit - so they won't be lsoing the full £3k

did you pay by CC

Sorry to hear about this, and makes me wonder if it is worth ordering anything at the show and paying up front. I ordered some wine there but was deceived by the wine merchant into believing that it was sulphate free. Once it had arrived (well most of it, it was 2 bottles short), I found that it does contain sulphite, but had to translate the Romanian label first! Now the merchant is ignoring my emails, and not responded to telephone request for a refund (unless I forfeit £40 cancellation fee shown in small print on the back of the order form). I have contacted Trading Standards, and now await a response from them.

In your own case, I would have thought that Raymarine at least have a moral obligation to refund your money, and then take it up themselves with their contractor.

part paid by credit card and part by bank transfer for reasons I wont bore you with, so should get that bit back, but it was by far the smaller proportion. Also some of the total order wasnt Raymarine stuff (eg VHF radio) so I wouldnt expect them to be responsible for that, obviously

i would only use CC for transactions above the £200 CC protection. i even paid the berthing fee that way @ no extra cost to me

Sounds good - can you provide a reference for that?

From this (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases)

Therefore if you're buying something or ordering tickets or flights worth over £100, pay for some or all of it on the card to ensure you're protected. Though do keep your receipts as well as the credit card statement to make it easier.

Edit - I notice the maxiumum amount is £30k rather than £25k.

Not good, but have you been in contact with them, WP1? Presume it's the Plymouth based firm? If so I have had dealings with them in the past and they were good. But that's no help to you.

Initially yes, but in last week or so emails and phone calls went unanswered and today I was told that what I had feared had happened.

I agree that they were very good. Martin clearly knew his stuff and we spent a lot of time putting the best package together that would work with the existing kit etc. We actually paid a bit more than we needed because we felt that was the decent thing to do, having taken up about two hours of his time, rather than simply note down what he said and then go and order off the cheapest website we could find.

Sadly the fact that not everyone has the same scruples is probably the reason he has gone under , another victim of the recession and the web!

It sounds that he was "Over trading" & should have never taken your money in the first place.

Surely if they employed him, as a contractor or not, to represent them, on their stand, selling their gear, then they must be legally responsible.

it turns out that these guys are neither employed nor even paid expenses by RM to staff the stand; the idea is that the orders they win make it worth their while. However they are all kitted out with RM corporate clothing etc., so as noted above probably no legal responsibility but a moral one.

In fairness to RM they have tried to call me back this afternoon when I was out so maybe they have a plan - although clearly not one they want to put into writing just yet!!

Obviously the ccard option sounds hopeful

Having once had a business go bust under me many many years ago I know how suddenly it can all collapse just when you thought all was coming right.

Still...

What an interesting thread. We popped along to the Raymarine stand at LIBS and spoke to a chap who sat down with us and explained all the bits we'd need to set up the new system for the boat. A few '000 quids' worth of stuff. However, I think he must've been one of the Raymarine staffers, as when we were done, he told us we'd need to pop to the chandleries to buy it as they didn't sell stuff direct.

I guess we were lucky!

I can't believe, if it was only 3 weeks ago, that the guy wasn't aware of his financial situation while he was taking your money ... I'd suggest he knew exactly what was going to happen and was tryng to rake in as much as he could for himself, not his business.
