Just a thought but as I now live in Gibraltar and no longer need a car it would be very practical to have my small boat or any bigger boat here as well. Boat and Cars in Oxfordshire....10000 miles away. Lots of berths in Spain but I will need a car so would prefer the boat here. However there is a huge (5 year) waiting list and then a true Gibraltarian born and bread will always jump the queue so it could take even longer.

My thought is that there are a few boats for sale and the Marinas will honour the berthing contract for a new owner. So do I buy a boat I do not want just to get a berth....then sell that and then buy the boat I want? Or do I compromise on the boat and keep the best I can buy in the berth I want just to be local. This would mean selling the Boat in the UK but would save shipping costs.

,...or do I buy a car and travel 40 mins to Duquessa! Buying a car means less boat money so I would end up without the boat I really want. Also at the whim of the Euro and Spanish (matriculation TAX)!!!!!

Cheers

Would have thought its a no brainer.

Buy a boat and if unsuitable, buy another one at the SPanish. Do the swap over, then sell the first one. Wouldnt advise leaving the old berth empty for any length of time.

Didn't Paul Allen (Microsoft guy) do this in Antibes in order to guy a berth for Tatoosh/Octopus?

Cheers

He did indeed. He bought Tiny Rowland's boat m/y Hanse and immediately flipped it, just to get the 130m berth at the south side of IYCA Antibes. That's probably the second best yacht berth on the planet, after Kingdom 5KR's berth at t'other end of IYCA. So Nautorius you'd be in good company :-)

Hi Paul will let you know when I'm cruising to Gib next meet up for a coffee.
I hear by the way that they still have'nt cleared up the oil from the Marina, is that right.

Some clients of mine did jus that recently in that they moved to Firengirola, but had to buy a scrappy little sail boat to secure the rental berth.

They already owned a berth in Duquesa with their Sealine on it so swapped the two boats, and I have just sold the scrappy littel yacht for them.

I have also now sold their 12m berth here in Duquesa for a bargain price. Berths have dropped a lot this year as you would expect. 10m een cheaper.

By the way when you mention matriculation tax, if you are a Brit living in Gib, your not a Spanish resident and therefore can keep a UK flagged boat in Duauesa no problem. Its only if you become a res.

Is there really a waiting list system in any marina? I've heard it's a matter of paying a facility or arrangement fee to "accelarete" progress through these "fictional" waiting lists. Is this myth or a secret fact? If true it seems less expensive than buying and reselling a boat. A couple of £k as an "arrangement fee" seems less expensive. Head down running for cover now! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS: IMHO, It shouldn't be this way if it is, but if it is so, then is it the only realistic way to get a berth in such areas?

Clive, please could you just remind me about the rate of matric tax? 12%? And is it annual, or is it just paid once when the boat is new or first arrives in Spain? And do you happen to know how you pay it - do they come round and assess, or do you go to the tax office with the invoice for the boat and pay the tax as a paperwork process?

Just interested cos a friend (Spanish res) is buying 2nd hand boat (and there are all sorts of shenanigans being proposed!)

jfm, this tax issue is a minefield. There are two very very long threads on Liveaboard about it, even consulting lawyers and getting them to post on the forum. The major problem is lack of clarity, and moreso lack of sufficient precedent of the tax being applied evenly across Spain.

To answer the OP, we once visited Moraira in Spain, went into the marina office and was told we would have to wait years to get in, and then at great expense.

We were told that people do buy boats just to get the berth, to the extent that one person bought a boat identical to one he already had in Denia just up the coast !

Apparently it is the best way to get a berth or mooring in the Isle of man. Buy the boat and retain its berth. You sell it and put your own in at a later date.

In parts of France you have to do both, buy a boat and pay a sweetener. I looked at a V58 in La Napoule, and was told if I bought the boat I could keep the 20m rental berth by paying a backhander of 10,000 euro to the port director.

Hi Clive,

I look forward to catching up. Currently Living Between Queensway and OV so anywhere is good for me! (Both within 5 mins walk!!)

Yes, Some of the Oil is still in Ocean Village. The boats which have not been cleaned up have their fenders covered in oil and therefore the sides of the boats. Not pretty! However probably 85% has been cleaned up.

Will look forward to the boatshow as well!!

Cheers

Re: Anyone bought a boat that they didnt want just to get a Marina Ber

Paul,

Just spotted your comment re OV!! We have our boat in there and are currently away for 6 weeks - is there some oil floating about? Nobody has told us anything. Any info would be great - thanks!

Hi Paul I did send of for info on the boat show and they informed me of the charge for various length boats to berth over the four days. Not exactly cheap I can assure you. Problem was that was it, no show plan to intinery in fact no details at all. Dont think its even on OV web site?

I spoke to metal micky yesterday he lives on his boat in Marina Bay, and he says he knows nowt about it, and he lives there. Before I commit I need to know that they are marketing the show, (no ads in MBY etc as far as I can see)

Can you put your ear to the ground for me.

Re: Anyone bought a boat that they didnt want just to get a Marina Ber

There was an oil spill about 4/5 weeks ago across in Spain and it washed directly into OV. I am happy too check your boat out if you PM me the details! LINKY HERE The boats afected the worst are those up against the cement key in front of the old Marina Bay complex. The Catamarans there have big oil slicks down their sides!

No information here about the Boatshow...no advertising or anything. I have asked around at work and no one knows about it......mind you this is Gibraltar so no surprise there!

Will keep my ear to the ground!

Yup, I bought my previous boat, an AZ46, partly because it came with a berth in Denia. I could have bought other AZ46's but the availability of a Med berth at a reasonable rate tipped the balance
But why do you need to berth your boat in Gib? Couldn't you get a berth in a nearby Spanish mainland marina (Duquesa?) or is there a tax issue?

Re: Anyone bought a boat that they didnt want just to get a Marina Ber

Hi Paul should be coming into Gib about midday tommorrow into Marina Bay ,have PM'd you me number if you are around. Just gotta do a Morrisons run etc.

Regards Clive

Turns out Suncoast has a berth for Sale in Gibraltar so I thought my luck was in. ....unfortunately it is slightly too large at 50m and slightly too expensive at £1.3million! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Back to the drawing board... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
