Has anyone had any success with spider sprays either bought or home concocted? (PLEASE do not mention conkers) There seem to be an awful lot more this year in the sail cover, sprayhood and just about everywhere else.

I've used two kinds, although can't remember the makes.

One was basically citronella spray and worked a treat. On spraying, they come out of their hidey holes and scatter. They don't return for at least a couple of weeks, even after rain.

The other was mint flavoured and proudly proclaimed it didn't harm the spiders, just deterred them. It was pretty useless.

I think most of the products available are based on one of the two ingredients above, so then it's down to price.

Yes there is one that works. It used to be called Amiral, but now goes under the name of spidergone, in a blue and yellow can. Hard to get over here any more but a guy on ebay does sell it. It's not cheap though at around £12 a can.

This one isn't friendly and kills spiders pretty much on contact. If you spray it on surfaces it protects them and keeps spiders away for about three months. I can vouch for it as I've used it in a spider infested holiday home in the French countryside. It's safe around animals but poisonous to fish.

I use it in my cockpit in the various nooks and crannies and under the canvas and never get spiders in there.

For inside the cabin though I use the sonic repellers. I have a few battery ones and a couple of mains powered ones strategically placed that I got from Nauticalia:

They don't appear to have the battery ones anymore, but they were heptagon shaed and the batteries last about three months. I've had these in my cabin for about 10 years now and have never had one spider inside in all that time.

Thanks for the info. With p&p it is nearer £15 a can - it must be good!

There is one called 'Spider Away' by Starbrite I think - bought from the chandlers when my wife was complaining about spiders in the living room at home and apparently worked well. Got me a few credit points!

It's very good if you don't mind killing them rather than just deterring them, so handy for an immediate problem if you want a fast solution. For longer term indoor use though the sonic repellers are very effective and work out cheaper in the long run. As I said, with a combination of both, in 10 years I've yet to see a live one in either the cockpit or cabin.

I can't for the life of me think why anyone would be bothered by a few spiders. They are great animals that eat flies.
