Any news of Skandia\'s salvage?

Any news from 'down under' on how they are getting on with the salvage of Skandia, following her problems in the Sydney Hobart Race?
Would be interested to know what the salvage tug & divers did with the mast prior to towing her back to port. Was it still in tact? Did they have to remove it?

David.

Re: Any news of Skandia\'s salvage?

Tia gave an update post on PBO on 31Jan in the thread http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/638827/an/0/page/1#638827 but I do not know if the tow has reached port. From that it would seem that there is major damage.

I do know that Konica Minolta is now in Hobart having motored there - the friends who emailed me from Hobart about her referred to considerable damage to her.

Re: Any news of Skandia\'s salvage?

The latest information I have is that Skandia is about to reach Flinders Island after a mammoth towing mission of at least 4 days (2 knots @ $2000 aus per hour) Here is one of the latest wrap ups ...
As someone who has sailed on her I am amazed that everything inside has been lost.... I did foredeck and the size and weight of her sails was immense.. to think that they were somehow flushed out of the hull is astounding. Apparently the mast (which was in four pieces) ripped a huge hole in the cabin top. All the rigging has torn the steering pedestals and winches etc from the deck so even her hull is a sad sight. It's so sad that this magnificent yacht may not sail again in the near future if at all.

As I said in the post John referred to.. Grant Wharington deserves nothing but praise for keeping the safety of his crew his main concern.

I wish.... ! unfortunately running your own business keeps you off the full-time racing circuit! Always looking for a crew position in Antigua week though! (or any other great regatta!)... any offers out there? :)

PS re skandia yes I heard that Grant is facing a big repair bill... when the mast broke in four pieces it ripped out a huge hole in the deck.... the sail wardrobe was then committed to the deep blue briny. The salvage mission was around $250 K Aus and the repair bill for the boat is many millions.. is that what you heard?
