Hi,
Just wondering if we have any cyclists on the Motor Boat Forum? Okay before I get flamed, I’m talking about Folks who go off on a road bike for long spins ... MAMIL’s or Middle Aged Men in Lycra.
I was wondering if anyone is into a bit of cycling and how do you carry your bike onboard? I brought bikes on holidays last summer but we were inland and on freshwater. I locked the bikes to the bow rail and covered them with a basic bike cover held in place with a few bungee cords. It worked fine but was only for hybrid bikes to cycle to get shopping.

This summer I hope to head out to sea for a 2-3 week trip and I would like to bring my good carbon road bike. I’m thinking of buying a soft bike bag where I would need to remove the wheels and turn the handlebars and drop the seat post. I could store the bike bag down below in the separate shower.
Has anyone done this? Is it a pain or okay?
What bag did you buy and where did you store it?

Living in the Holme Valley in Yorkshire is a nightmare with cyclists, they are a b___dy nuisance. We have narrow roads and they ride 2 or more abreast. One Sunday morning, I had to make a 6 mile journey to drop something off and I counted 17 groups on the way there and 23 on the way back? My missus said when I got home, if it had been in the afternoon, she would have thought I had stopped off for a couple of jars down the local!

Everybody deserves to enjoy their free time, it would be nice if they took other people into consideration...??

We have fold up electric bikes on board. They are kept on the aft deck and locked to the rail.. We hope to replace with full size Ebikes this year. We have space enough on the aft deck, which is enclosed but we still keep them under a simple bike cover. The main problem for us is lifting them up and over the rail onto the deck. It`s all a bit more of a faff than wheeling them out of the house or garage. Still well worth the effort for the exercise, shopping, etc.

Not the sort of bike you seem interested in but we have two of these folding bikes - Bickerton. Most of the time we keep them in the lazarette. Maybe re-think the type of bike

Bags for storage - the ones we have seem no longer available - something like this

Thanks folks, I recently picked up a nice secondhand bargain folding bike for general use on the boat. It’s a great bit of kit and I’m looking forward to using it. Must have a look at those storage bags. Thanks MartynG

I have a Swissbike, 26” wheels, folds in a very different way from most others, good to ride and takes up little space. Ideal for the boat.

I'm a "roadie " at home and we also have a tandem so that SWMBO doesn't get left behind on the hills! Not really sure that either are compatible with being on the boat ( Princess 420) so we've bought a couple of Dahon Jack folding bikes - basically full size mountain bikes with road tyres which fold neatly. Pop out handlebars and seat posts. Drop them into the Lazarette. Out of the way, and job done. Takes about 10 mins to retrieve them, open up and pop handlebars and setaposts back in. Then because thy have full size wheels we're not constrained with where we go (can use them off road and on) and also don't look like a pair of city gents

I took my Canyon over to the island last year for a little trip round the island with a number of forum member.

Just put it on the foredeck and strapped it on, it was a calm day mind and not sure i would do the same if was rough but then i guess our boat is a bit smaller than most.

hope to do the same again this year if we are allowed, the island really is a lovely place to ride with great roads, lots of pubs and a few hills.

The trouble with bike bags is sometimes the zips can jam in a salty environment, so when choosing a bag make sure it has a larger zip and keep it clean, small zips are the worse.
