Hi folks when I power washed my boat the other day some of the paint came off. And a lot of it is flaking and tatty.
Has anyone got any recommendations about good paint to use? It's a fibreglass boat.

I've been looking at this but don't see much info about it on line

SML Marine Paints - Jotafloor Rapid Dry Floor Paint – Factory | Garage | Warehouse – Trade Prices

There is also interdeck and sandtex but the colour range is pretty limited

If anyone has any suggestions it would be good to hear them

Thanks

I will take a lot of stick for this ... but I toddle off to local DIY store ... I choose the colour from a shade chart ... girl takes down large pot of paint .. punches hole in top ... injects pigment ... sticks it on shaker machine and I get exactly the colour I want in exterior grade wall paint.

Its cheap ... I get a lot more for my money .... it goes on and covers easily ... its non slip but nice on bare feet ... I can touch up easily anytime .. brushes wash out in water.

Here's my boat having had a deck job May 2019 ...

After this strange winter - she needs another coat ... but I still have about 15lts left !!

What I like about it ... is that it is not so hard and durable as say International / Jotun / Hempel etc. - that you are stuck with it ... because its relatively soft - its not hard to sand / level to give another coat. When you wash / brush it ... you remove a small amount and at end of year - you may find yourself in areas back to underlying coat. That's not a problem as you would have with other paints ... its easily flatted out and you re-coat.

Do a test patch first to make sure that the paint you are applying is compatible with the old stuff. In particular, unless it has been changed recently, Hempels’ deck paint is or certainly was chlorinated rubber and it will cause any old alkyd paint (eg old International) to fail. However you can go the other way (International over Hempels) safely enough.

I once had a chief officer make that mistake on a bulk carrier. He wasn’t my favourite chap that month.

I'm just about to start this job too. Chatting to SML coatings, they have their own paint coming out in a week or two, which they reckon is superior to the Jotun Jotafloor stuff.

Looked at Kiwi Grip but it's eye wateringly expensive. 4l for £160, makes antifoul and good malt whisky look cheap. Also it needs ideal conditions according to the tin.

Refuler I like the sound of that strategy actually - although I'll be going for a different colour ! 15lts left -how much did you buy??!!

Yeah looked at kiwigrip, I just wouldn't pay it though, it's about 5 times the price of the jotun stuff

Didn't know you could add the granules to the toplac stuff that's good to know

Good tip about the test patch.

I'm leaning towards the jotun stuff - really just because it's the cheapest.

Thanks

20lt drum ..... I have not only boats (4) but also a lot of other stuff that can use it ...

I can't recommend Hempel Multicoat. I used it a couple of years ago and it is starting to come off despite stripping the deck back to the gelcoat.

I wanted to use International's deck paint but the colour I liked (blue/grey) was no longer being manufactured.

I went for cheapo Sandtex - was very careful with all the masking tape for all the lines and edges, it has great grip and looked really good in white when done. I thought the turquoise made a 70s boat look even more 70s.

Stands up well to scrubbing with a broom ( 3 thin coats) and in a couple of places where coiled halyards had dripped all winter (I won’t do that again) I just touched up the paint and it blended in well. Total cost about 15 quid. Total time - beyond all measure.

Yeah I'd get sandtex as well - but colours are only white/beige ish
