Any deck paint recommandations ?

3 days also weather dependant, got the bow done and then it rained , what a mess, the hardest part is the masking , it is slow and tedious but like everything preparation preparation, Frog tape used as well , we found it better than the Blue tape and masking tape

I’m really impressed and I think I will try to follow your example.

We used cream international interdeck to cover our very tatty brown treadmaster. One year on, it looks good and has adhered well. Can't really compare with the other suggestions, other to say it has worked well for us.

Hi folks when I power washed my boat the other day some of the paint came off. And a lot of it is flaking and tatty.
Has anyone got any recommendations about good paint to use? It's a fibreglass boat.

I've been looking at this but don't see much info about it on line

There is also interdeck and sandtex but the colour range is pretty limited

If anyone has any suggestions it would be good to hear them

Thanks
I did my deck in Sandtex and cockpit in Kiwigrip 2 years ago. We live on board and have sailed over 3,000 miles since then. The Kiwigrip is looking very tired, but it gets a lot of foot traffic and sitting on, so I'm not too disappointed.
The Sandtex has been great. Good grip, held its colour and cleans up well (except where steel filings escaped from my dust sheet when cutting stainless bolts on the foredeck.) It would be a sod to sit on though. Anything with a rubbery non slip texture is kinder to trousers, oilskins and skin than a sand textured paint.

Oh, and deck colour. If you want to keep the cabin cool, the lightest colour possible is best. While painting my deck in the English heatwave 2 years ago (not ideal, I know, but we were nearing our time limit for leaving England) I measured a 10 degree C difference between the underside of the old grey deck and the new off white.

Nothing wrong with refueler's colour choice - and another vote for Kiwigrip. As it's emulsion based you can easily tint it any colour ( from a white base ) with pigments freely available on well know auction site.

A yacht painter chum of mine speaks highly of frog tape for getting a really clean edge.

I have painted a few plywood decks of the last 20 years, all of them were epoxied first, I used what was then Blakes deck covering, now the Hemple deck paint, I found it to be very long lasting.

Prep is 90% of the work.

I plan to go with 2 part industrial polyurethane for floors. Non skid areas are easy to do with any paint with brush and roller, but smooth surfaces have to be painted with spay gun otherwise it will be ugly on a fiberglass boat...

I think it also picks up dirt easily & doesnt clean up after. I use interdeck mixed to discontinued colour, its easy to pep previous applications & easy to apply
My experience is not so much, to my own surprise. Out here in the Med it rains red dust which gets into everything and Sandtex cleans up well. But I'm more tolerant of a bit of scruffiness than most boaters, to be honest. Perhaps in the mud of the East coast rivers where I did my first 40 years of sailing it would have been a different story.

I partly based my choice on a PBO article where they tested most products mentioned here for non-slip and dirt retention properties. Deck paints on test - Practical Boat Owner

I did say that wall paint which Sandtex is a brand of - tends to be a softer less hard wearing paint than the purpose deck paints. Not surprising really when you think its really for vertical walls and not for walking on.

But I have no problem keeping my decks clean and because its so easy to apply - I can touch up any area anyway ...

My cockpit sole is a double thick wood affair ... the top layer being local black Marine Ply that has a smooth side and other has non slip pattern all over it. At present its still black but once temps go up and weather improves - it will get the same blue paint as my decks.

Considering cost of things that have to be renewed annually like engine service parts, anti fouling and anodes cost of Kiwi Grip not such a big deal for something which lasts for years

mmmmmm maybe for you ... but not for me. Last service parts for my engine ? Can't remember ... I did replace some core plugs ... filters were few years back ... yes - think about due to change I reckon ... anti-fouling ? Haven't AF'd since about 2006 ..... Anodes ? Mine wore out long time ago ... never had any problems without ...

So all in all ... my drum of deck paint actually is about the highest cost item I have bought for my boat in last few years !!

Oh sorry - I forgot - I did replace the bulkhead compass and VHF - but those are not in the same category ...
