Kim says he knows exactly what this forum is for. In a weary request to get away from all the childishly vindictiveness that seems to be becoming more of a feature than anything to do with boating, could our administrator please define its purpose and lets get on with it.

Purpose

Motor boat chat = chat about motorboats. Debate fine. Personal insults, direct or indirect, not welcome.

Perhaps the time has finally come to put motor boat chat as a kind of lounge in one place and make another area for motorboat specific practical stuff. It's always been resisted in the past but there is more than sufficent volume to support both.

Re: Purpose

I think that a room for discussion about the theoretical side of boating would be good, this would let those who have an interest in learning rules e.t.c. a place to go. Chat is Chat, and people should also have a chance to do just that as well.

Re: Purpose

those are two separate issues. agree with the first of course.

But the second would lose some life, i fink? I mean, the stories /jokes wd have to be joly good ones, yet they mite be boaty tales with practical side. And on another forum, lots of practically things start off serious and then "go humourous". I have tried to make the fuel forum and for sale forum a bit more fun, and failed.

Most important (ooh, this is a good one) having the serious chat mixed in with a few gag threads, and even a bit of silliness, is quite atractive to newbies, i bet - cos they don't have to have a really really sensible question all thought thru - they don't have to know it all first. Even raving moronicly(?) stupid answers are allowed in a mixed forum, but less so if "this is strictly for boating stuff" and "this is the room where people can laugh and amuse themselves, harumph" - which implies that the other area jolly well isn't. I think the forums are unique in this regard - look at other forums where all diffrent types of cars, engines or whatever an you see a very sterile atmosphere. Too easy to say ooh that shuld be on another forum - so the banter reduces or stops.

all imho.

Re: Purpose

Hi Kim,

I agree totally with tcm on this one.

What i like about this forum is that you can ask a serious question, and get half a dozen or so serious answers, then after that it usually drops into all sorts of sillyness and humour, which i think is what keeps us all sane, Generally all sorts of good humoured banter between a few members, Its when the banter get serious and personal, that the problems start, and we all have to cut that out.

All in all i think this a fab. forum, with mostly fab. members.

Keep up the good work Kim and YBM .

Cheers..

Alistair...

Re: Purpose

given the volume, maybe it is an idea to seperate them. Taking the point about banter, I m less convinced it is such a roar apart from for those directly involved. The present situation is that, simply due to the number of postings, anyone after advice or sharing of knowledge is likely to get swamped by the (private) chat ( or these days, inceasing bitchiness) between a usually small group of individuals. Fair enough, but maybe have one for practical( or theoretical) advice to do with motor boating and another play room for boating pals( or enemies) to muck about in. Its not that one should be full of guffaws and the other as sterile as an operating room.
Isnt the real issue that people seem to be becoming increasingly intolerant, and too many postings unnecessarily vitriolic. If having two will stop that, please lets do it immediately. But I m not convinced it would. If we could stop all the playground politics and omit all those purposeless postings, I think we would get back to a happy medium of fun and help living together. And a massive drop in postings probably !

Don't do it! Its the variety (and your generally light fingered moderation) that give the forum its character.

There are already 2

PBO for the really dry stuff like 'how do I tighten a screw' where the threads hardly ever run more than 2 replies

and MBC for the rest, more wordy and interesting stuff with the occasional punch up ususally through misunderstanding

<hr width=100% size=1>...but then I would say that wouldn't I.....

Re: Purpose

Just had a quick read through the locked thread and can't see anything to suggest a slanging match, one misunderstanding and an apology for it but that's all. Locking it for that seems a bit severe!!

Re: Purpose

1) PBO is for the tecckky stuff - lets leave MBC as it is.
2) Kim was right to lock the thread. We need a period of cooling down - posting in a less aggressive manner- then we can get things back on the original uneven keel.
3) Group hug - everyone - group hug.

I made a mistake, I am not allowed to do so? Then eat humble pie for doing so? I said I was wrong, OK is that not enough?

Re: Purpose

I forgot to kiss Kims a@se in the first one!!

Actually acording to my wonderful laptop the first one was never sent which is why I tried again. I would delete one of them but if I deleted the first one your post would not make sense and if I deleted the second then your post would be hanging in midair - I'll just leave them both in and look a twit I think

No, no mistake - example

Unlike lots of people who have nankity old boats in the med, we use ours and travel far and wide. I do my very best to keep it in tip top condition and am always learning, which i think its important - much better than taklking about maintenance from the comfort of an office desk all paid for by someone else, like many hereabout seem to do. I also ensure that my posts are full of intersting verbiage about the most important subject inthe world, which is me, and what I'm doing, and my boat. Oh, I know it isn't the largest but at least it is paid for with money I have paid tax on, which I suppose does sort-of implies that anyone with a larger boat is probably a criminal, altho i haven't actually said so, etc etc.

See? That's why you (and loads of others) go bonkers.

CCscott, as many/most are here, you are often a fumbling illiterate buffoon BUT the flavour of your posts contributes positively. You do not need to apologise all the time - or at leaast- not more than once. You were not wrong to feel narked at earlier (thnakfull locked) threads which seemed to read badly. IMHO. Note that it is possible to call others names such as fumbling illiterate buffoon without it seeming unpleasant. Note also complete lack of smileys.

Great illustration...

...of the power of the written word and how people see certain things without perhaps understanding the intent of the message.

Message was an all ships one and was not just sparked by the whole issue of what happened with your post but also the subtle but still adverse comments elsewhere that potentially could have sparked another spat.

Nothing personal.
