Re: Purpose

I see this forum as a great way of obtaining information on practical issues, both by using the search engine and also by posting questions. This forum must be one of the more active of what can be classed as "un-formal communities of practice" out there on the www. (sorry for getting a bit boring from now on, but I un-fortunately do happen work with this kind of stuff).

As far as I can see, we are all gathering on this forum to share and learn from one another and are somehow held together by a common interest in a body of knowledge and are driven by a desire and need to share problems, experiences, insights, tools, and best practices. As such, by this interaction, we deepen our knowledge of our choosen subject.

Now to the more serious part;
If we were to filter out all the light hearted banter, we will be split into more defined groups, where a lot of the x-learning process will be lost and users, particulary new ones, will be discouraged by the seriousness of the discussions. (which is OK in a directly work related situation, but should be avoided, if possible, in a forum such as this).

I for one do and will continue to apply my "noise filter" when I read & post here on this forum. This simply because that amongst all the information and discussions, one can usually extract some real gems. I do hope that the forum will stay "as is", and in the spirit it was initially conceived.

Re: Purpose

In a vain attempt to lighten things up - could you please tell me where I can buy a "noise filter" and is it suitable for both the confuser and the kids.

Kids\' noise filter

After some years of in-depth research on this subject, I have come to the conclusion that the most effective filter for kids' noise is to position yourself in an office, ideally about 20 miles distant from them, and equip yourself with an assertive dragon of a secretary who filters all phone calls and in particular those from kids, SWMBO, mistress (ooops), cold callers and others. Strangely, however, this becomes counter-productive after a couple of hours and you start to yearn for the sound of their clear, innocent voices demanding money and gifts from you (the kids, not the cold callers).

I have also recently discovered that they find it a bit of a push to compete against the noise from a Mercruiser 5.0L efi at WOT, but that's a rather expensive remedy.............

Re: Purpose

The "noise filter" is very easy for me to apply as I can always say that I do not understand the finer connotations of the words used, as English is not my primary language. In your particular case it may be difficult to do the same, but you may be able to re-configure the filter you may have developed when dealing with in-laws ....

Re: Great illustration...

Not syaing you don't know what your on about, but what you forget is that a lot of people meet face to face fairly regular. Which is another good byproduct of the forum. A cretain banter starts at these meets and then carries over to the forum. I can see how to those who have not met, it can seem a bit aggresive or piss takey.

Re: Purpose

Kim, as you know I am one of those who were here even before this forum.. the former forum. You carry on running it as you see fit and don't listen to anyone. You are doing a great job. In fact give yourself a raise, put your wages up to £12.8.4p a week.

Re: Purpose

I'm afraid that I also don't like the idea of spitting off MoBoChat since these spats seem to occur in the middle of perfectly sensible threads. The abuse, or misunderstandings, perpetuated by certain forum members should not be seen by unregistered 'Lurkers' as this may deter increased membership (although recent events seem to indicate the opposite).

I would therefore suggest that we have a new forum simply called 'Outside'. This could only be viewed by registered or regular members. If an altercation was brewing, the offending members would be obliged to say "See you Outside, Jimmie" or whoever. The rest of us would casually move to the new forum shouting "Fight, Fight, Fight!!" If however you found anyone brawling at the bar, as it were, you would simply move the entire thread to the Outside and effectively be the bouncer wivout the bovva. No explanations required, no time consuming arguments. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: Purpose

Yeah right that would work - NOT.

I think the whole of MBC would be "outside" before you could say ".

Re: Purpose

agreed!
the issue is not what happpens outside but the way in which people (obviously nobody here though......) invite people outside inside threads.
equally a seperate forum will not resolve this
binning people will result in less people one way or another
locking threads simply results in new posts entitled "locked thread continues but non confrontationally" (it did but that's not the point)
let's all stop looking for the faults in people and their posts - life's too short

No, don\'t forget...

...actually very mindful of that and believe that the forum has positive benefits for enabling everyone to meet up. But it can also angender a cliquey feel that can put the next generation of new users off if they are not robust enough to understand the sometimes puzzling comments and so, in running this place I have to be mindful of that too and encourage everyone to be as inclusive as possible.
