Talking to a man from the PLA last year he told me that the permanently dredged channel is quite narrow and that there will only be one vessel in Seareach at a time. It's huge investment for one ship at a time - they must be huge ships with a fast turnaround.

The whole site is huge and they hope to have the big distribution depots there. They are spending lots on road improvements. The huge number of lorry movements is going to cause havoc on the A13 and M25. They obviously expect to do plenty of business.

Port of London - River Thames NOTICE TO MARINERS No.L5 of 2013
LONDON GATEWAY - 100 METRE EXCLUSION ZONE FOR QUAY CRANES
On or about 28th February 2013 quay cranes for London gateway will start being delivered by ship
ZHEN HUA 26 and at a later date ZHEN HUA 27. The quay crane booms will be in the lowered position extending some 75 metres from the edge of the quay. It is expected that the cranes booms will remain in that position for some 2 months.
Whilst they are being commissioned a 100 metre exclusion zone is put in place for this period. During off loading of the quay cranes in addition to the 100 metre exclusion zone an 8 knot speed restriction will be imposed and all vessels are to proceed with caution. Speed restriction when in place will be included on river & estuary broadcasts by London VTS on VHF channel 68 and 69.
Further information can be obtained by contacting London VTS by telephone 01474 56031.

If my memory serves me right, the ZHEN HUA something or other was the crane ship that got loose at Felixstowe in a gale and wrecked a consignment of new stuff. With luck Roger, you might find it on Old Leigh's shore!

Cranes towering over Canvey (sorry not great but best iPhone could do from here)

Have they not made provision for rail access? Surely a new container port should not have been allowed to be developed unless a substantial part of the traffic could be rail borne? Felixstowe is - at last - making efforts to improve rail usage to reduce the road impact, and I believe the Bathside development can only go ahead with substantial upgrading of its rail link.

So it does have a rail link at least

How well used it will be is another matter

"It will create employment opportunities for north Kent, an area of high unemployment"

Geography lesson required unless they are going to run a ferry from Sheerness.......

They used that statement on our BBC SE News..... we fell about laughing. Not a programme noted for its accuracy, we have frequently noticed!

I have this vision of a couple of chaps drinking tea in a shed in the Terminal saying "Can you hear something? I thought I heard a 'bong'"

I am impressed with whoever did the maths about centre of gravity and roll on the Zhen Hua 23 and her sister ships!

An awesome engineering concept.they must have some very large capacity ballast pumps

I hope the Chinese supplied them free of charge since their prime purpose will be to lift containers coming in loaded with goods made in China !
