I know you're all probably sick of the "Moved to the Med" threads but just thought I'd share our personal experience having just completed the move.

As a quick background, we've had a boat for about the last 7 years - 1 year on the Thames, then an upgrade and a move to Port Solent and then an upgrade in Port Solent where we've been happy since 2009. Current boat is an '11 Fairline Targa 44 which we've been very happy with. Only thing that hasn't been great is the weather as we all know.

For the last few years, we've taken advantage of the extended cruise (or whatever it is) with Premier that allows us credit on renewal. During that 6-8 week period we've put the boat in CYH, taken the RedJet backwards and forwards and have been very happy. Suited our lifestyle (travel a lot on biz) and big circle of friends.

This is Humu Humu with sail-boat friends in Cowes:

Anyway, having had a conversation about the lack of sunlight with SWMBO, we decided to explore some other places. Lots of forum momentum and other friends in the Med meant we had to go explore. Like a few others, we ventured to Cala D'Or last year and chartered one of the BCU boats. Fatal... Best sales job they ever did :-)

After a millisecond of deliberating, we were at the boatshow in Southampton buying a new tender and various other bits in our vague bid to move. That was the easy bit. Post our usual Jan holiday, a bit of holiday "cheer" and a "let's do it", I tried to put this all together before renewal at PS in April. I thought a few months to sort this would be easy. I ended up failing miserably due to lack of time to get it sorted and a general "we're busy, can we do it in a couple of months" type stuff from various suppliers. Don't get me wrong, it's not that they weren't professional - it's just that everyone is very very busy apparently. I had to get out before renewal in the UK.

My spec was Dinghy Chocks and tie-downs for the new Dinghy, Aircon and some anchor chain. Erm and some underwater lights [ducks]. Oh, and lifting and shifting it on a truck. Latter was easy as the forum recommendation is C2C so just went forward with that. Anyway, after a few bits of messing about and some very helpful people (BCU and many people on this forum either posting or via PM), the deal was done and we were off. To be clear, BCU and C2C made this whole thing happen after I'd had enough and shouted "help!!"

The boat arrived c. 2 weeks ago. We flew out over a long Easter Weekend and can say we haven't looked back. I know the weather was crappy that weekend for everyone here and I did P a few people off with the "swimming pool" pics on facebook. If it helps, I had a big sunburn.. :-) Soon got over it with very cold beer and sangria. Hope that makes it better.

Pics below:

Lift from Swanwick:

Now going backwards without any covers for a week (going to cry as she was clean)

c. 6 days later via a couple of ferries and lots of zig-zag route due to bridges and roads, off the truck, in Palma... Lot's of big boats there - you can just see her in the background! En route to Cala D'Or

One day later after we arrived (and a lot of scrubbing a very dirty boat from the transit), we nipped out to Cala Mondrago for a bit of a float and food. Lovely weather for March but not brave enough to swim. We're standing on the bow having a "erm, is the anchor holding" moment. I'm saying "of course", SWMBO saying "Reaaaaly???". Cue from me "look around you, who cares?". Normal life then resumed.

Finally, asleep in the Marina. They're dredging it and generally messing around so I don't yet have a fixed berth - although I know where I will be if you get the drift.. Anyway, this pic is taken from a very crafty angle as we are basically the tender to everything around us in this area. Originally, we were rafted up against a T65 and neighbours with a 80+ jobby. Now I think we're going to be next to a T50 and Squaddie. Like I said, best sales job they ever did :-)

The pictures after this are not for the forum as they generally involve a few celebratory drinks once we'd got her back to her berth safely...

To summarise:

All in all, we're very pleased. The boat is well suited to the climate (big speedboat), we've vaguely got a berth sorted and the tender (passerelle inbound) will work for us.

Not to mention the fact that we turned up on "opening weekend" for a lot of the bars and restos, nice to meet a few forumites and locals alike. Will try not to post any more "swimming pool" pics...

Once again, thanks for the huge contribution from the forum and a big "thanks" to BCU and C2C who continue to provide excellent service.

Mat

Thanks Jeremy. We're going to be just down from the YC I think. I was busy scrubbing and sorting stuff out so we can relax next time round.

Said "no" to the berth just outside Smugs. Hopefully catch up later in the month..

Looks like a very interesting move and what a lovely place to keep your boat and enjoy her

Excellent post, keep the reports coming as you explore the islands. The British weather really is not conducive for boating.

Congratulations. Glad it went so well. I suspect you were thinking beforehand that getting the boat there would be a big mission, but now that it is all done (w help from BCU and C2C) it feels "that was a heck of a lot easier than we thought"
You've made a good choice with Cala D'Or. Love the Mondrago picture - it's busier there in August haha!
The Sq65 off yr stbd bow in the night time marina pic belongs to a nice guy (Mike) - he was in our Cala D'Or raft ups and shot the quadcopter "Mondays" video of our 5 boat raft in cala Gran (the little place on your left just as you turn right to exit Cala D'Or and hit the open sea; take a stern line to the rocks)
Feel free to post more pics!

Thanks all. Will try not to post too many more pics!

To answer a few Qs.

@JFM, you're right - it was a big deal as we approached it in a set manner i.e. let's get everything done here then stick it on a truck. That was the difficult bit, despite a 2m+ lead time, we just weren't able to get the airco sorted to our satisfaction. That's exactly the point I rang BCU and asked for some help. They're building (have built) a great business out there so I managed to outsource the whole lot to Nick. All the works - aircon, passerelle, anchor and some bits and bobs are all being completed in Cala D'Or. The "only" things we had to do were stock it full of spares / personal items, get the dinghy delivered, upgrade the outboard and then we kind of let everything happen to us. I wasn't even in the country when it was moved to Swanwick and loaded. It all went very smoothly but was definitely a Plan C that turned into Plan A. As you know, this isn't their day job so I was very appreciative of the help. On-going customer service A+++++++

The other compromise we had to make was a berth. In the UK, I'm sure we've all wandered around various Marinas, looking at which particular space in the water you're going to rent. This didn't and couldn't happen at Cala D'Or. We shipped her blind, knowing that they "would fit us in somewhere". Not ideal but I knew once we had the boat there and we were physically present then we would end up where we wanted to be. It's still on-going but I have a good idea of 1 or two spots where we're going to be. I've already paid so have committed but I thought that if the boat is physical and the cash is in their bank then we had some room for negotiation on location. Fingers crossed.

@pete - Price-list below. Hamble-esque prices... This is publicly available in their reception. They are offering 10% off on annual payment in advance although as they get busy this may apparently disappear (!)

Other than that, haven't found a big gotcha yet. It did take some faith and commitment but she got there and is being looked after well.

Oh, forgot that within the process, I changed insurance from GJW to Y. Been with GJW since the start of boating but they weren't able to accommodate the transit insurance and end location without a massive increase in premium. Y were very easy to deal, covered everything and slight decrease in premium overall. I'm also happy with the policy wording - another big thumbs up for the forum.

Hi Mat,

Big welcome to Cala d'Or.

You will find Yann very easy to deal with and he will do his utmost to arrange a berth to your satisfaction.

He likes the Brits and hates people who want to haggle over berthing fees.

Pay on time and he will be your best friend.

Agree with what you say about Boats UK, they are certainly bringing a true professional touch the marina.

Give them two seasons and all the boats in the marina will from the Princess stable.:D

Matm, good call handing the work over to Nick, Pete and team. They are top top blokes and totally know what they are doing when installing this kind of equipment, and they're totally trust worthy, and great fun over a beer or three.

Hi Mat - just wanted to add my congrats on making the move. I also think the BCU boys deserve their success - they are just very good at making things happen, while continuing to be very hands-on. In my case, for example, it was Nick himself who drove the forklift truck when loading my generator to the back of my truck en route to fit it ahead of my own Med move. There are a thousand other stories like this. I've also had good experiences with Coast 2 Coast, three times now.

Anyway, enjoy the sunshine, and well done again. Have a great season. Come over and see us in SoF some time... :D

Hi Mat, great thread I am hopefully on the way to join you this year, I am looking at shipping her down as not sure if you can road deliver a 50footer ?

I had the 2 day hangover to prove it.. It was the first night that many of the bars opened for the season so we had to test the resilience of the owners over a long evening to check they were up for the season :-)

Thanks Jimmy (and for the help on PM). Was chatting with Nick this evening on email and he's got all the gear and ready to fit airco and passerelle before the end of the month so all good. Also asking them to look after it going forward on a monthly basis. Never been let down yet by the team and agree they totally deserve their success.
