Another "Moved" to Sunnier Climes thread

Hi Mat, great thread I am hopefully on the way to join you this year, I am looking at shipping her down as not sure if you can road deliver a 50footer ?

All depends on which specific 50-footer you're talking about; C2C have moved Targa 62s and Squadron 58s by road, as examples.

Looking at that pic with the boat anchored in crystal clear water, beautiful beach, sun shining out of a blue sky...I just don't know how you fellows stand it.?

lol.

Re the couple of comments on price-list, if you click it and go through to photo box, there's another copy in there (bigger) if you scroll to the left. You can then print it, read it more easily etc.

Well done, mat. We started our Med adventure in Cala d'Or ourselves in Feb 2003 when we purchased a Targa 48 from the local Fairline dealer at the time. I must admit that the weather was a bit different to what you experienced. One day it was 2 degC at midday and when we went for a drive with our rental car in the mountains on the NW side of Majorca, the main road was closed due to snow! Anyway I can assure that most of the time it is sunny and warm. Subsequent to that experience we spent 5 yrs in Majorca with another boat and it is a lovely cruising area. Cala Mondrago was always one of my favourite spots. Cala d'Or itself is a very pleasant marina as I'm sure you'll find out and I'm also sure that the local forumites will make you very welcome

Btw you will probably experience having your berth moved about regularly in the marina. Its just a Med thing. Boats seem to be more itinerant in the Med and marinas tend to shift boats about to accomodate newcomers. The only way really to guarantee a particular berth is to long term lease it

Not to mention the fact that we turned up on "opening weekend" for a lot of the bars and restos, nice to meet a few forumites and locals alike. Will try not to post any more "swimming pool" pics...

We are now home too after our first proper week in Cala d'Or since I brought her round from Palma in February. We have had a wonderful time and can't wait to get back out there. It was really good to meet and have a glass or two of Cava with some forumites. We were struck by how friendly and helpful everyone was, and what a nice atmosphere there was around the marina/restaurants/bars and shops despite it being so early in the year.
It was great to meet you Mat (what I can remember of it!).
It was my wife's first visit to Cala d'Or.... If she didn't like it I was faced with booking CLOUD9 on the next ship back to Blighty! Thankfully for me... she did.

@Deleted User - thanks! Going to go with the flow on berths. Sunshine fixes everything although don't quote this to Yann/Jan(?) the Marina Manager 'cos we had an "agreement"

@pete - try a laptop - I spent ages resizing, at least you try a bit!

@cloud9 - do I know you? lol. nice to meet you R & G! Glad you got to eat that night.. Oh, and thanks for the "my boat is bigger than yours pic" - there's other threads for that you know :-)

Update: going out on the 22-27th April and I'm told all the works will be done. She's out of the water already apparently for the aircon. Pass is there on Friday and needs some GRP/strengthening work then will be fitted. Ordering some strops/straps from Rapid so we're looking good for end of month annoying pics.

Quadcopter next!

Errr well I hope if there is any forum get together in Cala D'Or you don't forget us landlubbers ?

Landlubbers are dangerous! A comfortable home that doesn't rock about.... none of the ridiculous costs of being afloat.... 10 minutes chatting with Mrs C9 and CLOUD9 could well be on the market! Not sure I can take the risk!! PM sent...

You will have to attend a interview with the committee first.

As there is no committee perhaps you could be the Chairman and form a club:D

Second thoughts, maybe the idea of a club is a step to far.

However, we could have a (daily) committee meeting in Smugglers then move that to once a week out of the season?

Seems to be a good few forumites basing themselves in Cala D'or. There will soon be enough for a SCM vs Antibes vs CalaD'or footy tournament.

What's the attraction of Cala D'or over the Palma marinas? Isn't the transfer time / cost from the airport an issue or are you guys keeping cars at the airport? Not being critical, genuinely interested as I'd be leaning toward Portals along with the orange Germans.

Pete, we just went there, based on some threads here, chartered "Relax" (T47) - it was nice - SWMBO said "yes" and therefore JFDI as fast as possible!

In serious mode, we didn't look around too much, had friends elsewhere in Spain but Cala D'Or worked for us. The drive is really easy - the roads are amazing there, much better than the "olympic cycle route" I live on in Surrey. c. 60km from PMI so you can do it in sub 1hr. Lots of hire companies but we'll probably stick a car over there.

Palma harbour seems to be a huge place with lots of big boy boats. We've only been in CD for a couple of weeks but it was a "let's do it" decision that I think will work for us.

Cheers

M

Each to their own but CD in my book is much better than Palma or Portals. Problem with those places, in my book, is that there aren't enough nice anchorages close by. When you exit Palma you have to turn right, as there is nowhere close if you go straight on, and upon turning right you dont have enough choices in my book (comapred with Antibes etc and CD). Plenty of folks might not care about it but I do, which is why SoF marinas work and CD works, imho.
Palma itself is also a bit rolly, and has industrial feel in some places, again just in my book. Portals solves that, as realised by the clever orange people mentioned, but still leaves you with too few local anchorages imho
So even though matm might have JFDI-ed it, I reckon he and L made a great choice

Thanks JFM.

We could have gone anywhere. We chose CD and then JFDI'ed it - why not? I have no idea about some of the debate over berths/countries/boats. Therefore I can't contribute. We will try this life for a bit and then give an informed opinion another time. I reckon we;re probably going to have a pretty good time anyway as we made "A" move

Basically we made something happen with our little boat. And it's Sunny :-)

PS. I'm so excited about my next trip over there. She's on the hard at the moment getting stuff fitted.
