Was checking batteries the other day and noticed that the extra +ve terminal (a small threaded post) on the pt starter battery had dissolved and what was left was a yellowish-brown liquid. Wot 'appened'?

on the basis that Jon (unusually?) is offering a lighthearted response......may I suggest that the lead of the terminal is being carried off by +ve ions in the moist environment and depositing itself to earth somewhere? Posibly your own earth pillar? Silicon grease will normally prevent this.
Used to be obvious on the positive terminals of electronic plugs (because the amount of metal was so small) when left live and exposed to the sea air
