The Ocean Safety AIS Rescue Me transmits for more than 24 hours. Not a "mickey-mouse gadget" then.
I have EPIRB on the stern rail that auto-activates. I wear an Rescue Me on my lifejacket.

I was doing a pre season test of my PLB a few years ago and got a phone call from Kinross Air monitoring station or something like that enquiring if it was in fact a test signal ! I was rather embarrassed and asked if I had done something incorrectly, the guy said no but my signal was picked up by an aircraft and relayed and they wanted to check. It was a while ago but I think it was about 30 minutes or so after I pressed the test button on the device.
