Anode removal

Hi

I am trying to replace the bolts that hold the anode to the hull on my westerly, I cant get them out and they seem to have been glassed in from new (17 years ago!) Or do they thread in? Does anyone know?

Thanks

Have you removed all nuts on the inside, where the wiring is connected? Can you see plates on each about 30mm square on the hull bottom? If so, they are possibly just stuck to the hull with Sikaflex and antifoul.

Did same job on my 1983 Fulmar several years ago. The "bolt" is threaded at both ends with a square flange welded on in the middle of the bolt. From memory, the flange sits on the outside of the hull, with a washer and nut on the inside of hull, and the anode held in place with two nuts on the outside. The bolt is probably bedded in mastic giving the impression that it is glassed in - but I think this is unlikely. These bolts are subject to corrosion and need to be replaced from time to time -so should tap out from the inside.Good luck! Incidentally, Nitebird sails out of Rhu,so watch out for us - provided, that is,you don't end up with a hole in the bottom!

I ve just removed the studs from my Fulmar. Only bought the boat last summer and think they have been in for years. Firstly, I had real trouble removing the nuts on both sides of the hull and once removed the stud had almost bonded itself to the hull. Spray with Wd 40 and do something else and go back and try again after a few hours or next day. If you can get a grip of the flat plate attached to the stud you can as I did screw the stud out using mole grips. The other stud I had to drill out, as was unable to grip flat plate to turn stud, gradually working up the drill sizes taking care not to damage the outer edge of the hole i.e use a centre punch first before drilling. I had to chip bilge paint and resin away from the inner nut as was unable to grip nut. There is a large washer inside and I carefully chipped off the resin as i thought this may be hindering movement. This I will recoat again before intalling new studs. Hope this helps you. Perhaps you or anyone reading could let me know if the studs are standard size. John, Fulmar Meridian, Glasgow

Once removed, why not replace with s/s studs, washers and nuts.

These are now available and it should then be the last time it need be done.

Mike I am going to replace mine this week. I also thought they were stainless but are actually galvaniised. The mistake I made last time I replaced the anode was to lose the nut and put a stainless one in its place. Now the stud has corroded away completely leaving the stainless nut intact!!

Not recommended!!!

Mine are definitely s/s.

Think they come from ASAP. (marine suppliers) Much more expensive than galvanised, but once done, forget. (the studs, not anodes)
