I have an Air Marine, the predecessor of the Air-X. It makes an appalling noise but it can be reduced to a silent 10 rpm by a shorting switch supplied with the kit. I would consider myself guilty if I accidentally left it 'on' while away from the boat for any length of time.

I consider use of any machine noisy enough to be a nuisance to other berthholders to be unacceptable for any more than short periods, whether it be a wind genny, diesel genny, cockpit speakers or barking dog.

+1
I've used a Rutland for 6 years and they make a bearable noise and the regulator had a 'slow switch' too if you need it off.
Before updating for a different boat last year, I went around marinas and boatyards to assess the noise of different wind generators in relation to their claimed performance figures.
The Rutland won overall imo but I went for a new 914i, which, I discovered on mounting it to the pole, had a knackered bearing. ???
Marlec replaced it within a week so no complaints there.
£ for £ I'd go for a 913 if I had to choose again. Same mechanicals as the 914i just simpler electronics.

I nearly went for a D400 see... http://www.d400.co.uk/ these are exremely good chargers but heavy and pricy. similar sound as the Rutland with the volume turned up 5-10% but not as noisy as some by a long way

Please note, the manual also says that if you are not using it then it should be covered; that way the bearings are protected.

The reasonable use argument would suppose that the wind generator is covered during long periods when the owner is away and uncovered and working when onboard.

The realy annoying ones are not made by Rutland, unless the bearings are already shot. If your Rutland is noisy it probably needs fixed.

My ears are not that good, firing guns and using demolition charges as a youngster, but some of the higher output devices are frustratingly annoying compared to a rutland which I barely hear at a couple of berths distance whereas the Airx and others of that ilk scream like a demented banshee drowning out the rattling halyards.

I suspect in a quiet anchorage they make it like living beside a high speed railway line.

Basically noisy wind generators are not what most of us joined up for and those who insist on using them should be banished to commercial ports.

Securing the genny can knacker the bearings because they seize as they are designed to be constantly rotating. Which is why most blades are left free.

As for shore power, I hate to break it to you, but it's not infallible. :)

If like me they have a constant power drain like ultrasonic antifoul they need a backup incase the power trips off.

Most wind gens have a regulator which switches the gen to a slow speed when the batteries are charged, or if it's too windy it will free spin at speed, but it needs to be 40+ knots, then the noise is the last of your worries.

No shore power most definetly isnt infallible, when the power went off in the marina during the freeze last year the cast iron section of my water heater froze expanded and cracked, closely followed by the thaw which saw several hundred liters of water pumped over the galley tops and subsequently refrozen, it wasnt much of a welcome home after 6 weeks in Nigeria !

As for tampering with someones wind generator and then leaving an "anonamous message" PLEASE - get a spine !

If you dont like the noise, voice an opinion to the owner or marina staff and see what response you get, if its negative , live with the decision

If you don't like the noise, get out of the marina

If it's not wind gens it's splashing water on hulls, or chains on the pontoons or or or.

I do wonder when we became so intolerant of anything... if my gen is making a noise it hard to hear over the wind whistling through peoples rigging, should I expect people to remove their rigging to add to my selfish comfort?

Stopping a wind generator in the wind kind of defeats the object too.

I think some people would be happier with a static caravan, but then they would probably complain at the van 4 up as the children can be heard laughing and playing etc etc...

There was a rule in our YC marina that they had to be stopped, there is also a rule about noisy halyards and a warning that marina staff will if necessary deal with a problem and charge for their service. 'If you don't like the rules go out on a mooring' might seem an appropriate comment bearing in mind what others have said. We had an Aerogen6, the big one but this was tied off pretty well all the time as we had shorepower connected in our berth and silent solar as well, also as it happens switched off when in our berth. Never had bearing problems with the Aerogen which wasn't really bad like those horrible two bladed things anyway. Why would you want to wear out a wind genny running it 24/7 when you are plugged in, I don't buy the bearing damage either that sounds like a bit of warranty dodging bullsh!t to me.

Snooks,

there's your answer then; read the manual and cover the thing.

ribrage,

I have plenty of spine, and if you berth next to me making an inconsiderate noise you'll see it.

Dogwatch,

grow up; no-one will object to the sound of waves etc, but one should not have to tolerate inconsiderate behaviour by others who have cleared off leaving a noise nuisance.

Would it be Ok to leave a VHF or Radio 1 on an external speaker then clear off ?

In this case there is shore power available, and there are things like solar panels too; even if running heaters & dehumidifiers in winter there is no need to overcharge like this.

Incidentally I wonder if Snooks & co know the original designer of what became the Rutland wind charger? He passed away recently, but I very much doubt he'd want it to be a nuisance to others; when he retired from Test Flying at Dunsfold he went off blue water in a Nic 38...

A long way from my boat! :(

My first reaction was that it must be an Air-X, but they self-brake when the batteries are full. If it is one of those and it's screaming, either his batteries aren't on a charger or the regulator's faulty.

A herring gull thrown into the blades might shut it up. Or perhaps best follow Snooks' advice.

A frozen chicken will definitely shut it up :)

Noise nuisance is noise nuisance even in a marina. Wait till there is no one around and tie it off with a bit of old rope from somewhere. Trouble with approaching the guy directly is the possibility of an argument after which you cant really tie it off without him knowing.

Maybe threaten him with an ASBO - it is anti social after all.

Snooks - I'm surprised at you

so if something on your boat is annoying me I can freely step aboard , tamper with your property damage what ever I tamper with leave you an anonamous message, you feel thats acceptable behaviour and something that should be encouraged ???

you are the reason the americans have the right to bear arms !

ribrage,

if you knew me you'd know just how stupid your remarks are.

I would never do anything to damage anything of anyone's - and I still dispute the idea that stopping a fan will damage the bearings.

I'm also considerate and think of others; you would be extremely unlikely to find anything on my boat creating a nuisance, it's a part of something called seamanship.

Your imbecilic remark about resorting to weapons is why I mentioned leaving an advisory note anonymously, to avoid confrontation; it seems you are just the type to ignore you're causing a nuisance and go straight into an argument or worse - rather sad.

rather odd considering your comments are derogatory and inflamatory and aimed at a personal level at me whilst hidden behind a key board, so far im imbecilic and sad, why?

because I voice an opinion on here and I disagree with yours ?
because I would defend my property from unwanted tampering ?

as for quoting seamanship...please ... you dont know me OR what I do for a living.

My reference to America is their ability to defend their property and not roll over to bullies who make veiled threats and assume they have the right to climb onto other peoples property with out permission or justification.

dont make this personal

'Clambering onto your boat' would certainly be justified if you are inconsiderate enough to clear off leaving a nuisance; marinas often do this then charge for the 'work'.

I'd suggest you are the bully saying how dangerous it would be to mention the lack of seamanship & consideration to you.

Talking of noise - how are things at home, Snooks? Enjoying having a new baby daughter are we? Does she sleep?
Probably best not to tie her up or feed her frozen chicken lol.

So... To those that would intervene, are you prepared to stump up the repair costs of any damage you may do?

The marina presumably have the right to intervene in the small print of their berthing contracts (and presumably putting all the associated risks on the owner). In the absence of this, "it's inconsiderate" is not a good justification for criminal damage, which it would be if you were "reckless as to whether any such property would be destroyed or damaged", which it certainly sounds like some are

Snooks,

The reason I bought our wind gen was to provide power why should I cover it when it's not a nuisance?

I have ultrasonic antifoul so if the power goes off I would like a few weeks in hand before my batteries are run down to 50% and my boat is left without antifoul protection. I chose my Rutland because it was quiet, this was for my own sanity as much as my neighbours. My wind gen isn't a problem, so it's staying uncovered :D

I'll cover mine IF someone complains (which no one has, ever) and when shore power can be guaranteed 24/7 including when some numpty doesn't unplug it tripping my RCD (btw I pay for the power I use on my berth so no one should be using my power except me)

It's more antisocial to vandalise my yacht or steal the shore power I'm paying for.
