Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Dear PBO - great mag, great forum, use it all the time.

But PLEASE get rid of the pop up window ads - there's nothing that turns me off more and really makes me think about going back to uk.rec.sailing through a news reader instead.

I know you need ad revenue and none of us would like to see this forum closed due to lack of funds. Ads are tolerable at the top and bottom of the page, but these pop ups are like walking into a shop and having someone frantically wave an item in which you have no interest in your face... and then follow you around waving more rubbish at you.

When using the forum my left hand now rests permanently on the 'Apple+W' keys so I can kill these windows as soon as they appear and it ruins an otherwise great experience.

Yes, quite agree, unwanted pop-up messages are not the way to endear readers.Although maybe we've no right to complain about an otherwise free service.

Roger,
Download a pop-up killer as I have done.
http://software.xfx.net/utilities/popupkiller/download.htm
- download 2.75MB.
Then enter in the Pop-Ups That Will Be Closed, the details of the pop-up. This can be found by right cliking on the pop-up and going to properties. It will give you info beginning with - http://a947.g.akamai.net etc. Go to the Pop-up Killer and double click that info. It will then go into the Black List!!

It works. You can also do this with any other annoying pop-ups.

regards,
Philip

THanks philip and byron (all hail to the mighty owner of the Thames), that bloody renault ad's been driving me mad. A bit self defeating really 'cos there's no way I'd ever buy one of their bloody cars now. For the past week, every time I click anywhere, up comes the damn advert.

Lets see if I can kill the bugger, I'll just pretend it's a yottie. pow, pow kerpow blamm. ;-).

Well I don't actually see this as complaining; constructive criticism is how I see it. Whether it's free or not is not really the issue. If you annoy your users they will simply cease to visit the site. the less people visit the site the less debate there is; the less debate there is the less people visit the site - a diminishing vicious circle.

Yes this forum is free and as such, I'm happy for embedded ads on the page. I'm sure magazines margins are slim enough without having to subsidise a web site.

I'm sure PBO would rather people contributed to this forum than started telling friends not too bother as the pop-ups are so irritating. The forum helps build customer loyalty for the magazine and if I were the editor, I'd certainly value the forums to guage what people want to read about.

Cheers

The Apple W gives it away- you're a closet Mac user!

In which case visit www.icab.de and download the iCab browser. I use it to read these fora and don't get any pop-ups, whereas I do if I use Notscape or Internet Exploder.

It's also less RAM hungry - running in 10 Mb, compared with 19Mb for Notscape and 14Mb for Exploder
