Now you are an expert on anchoring you best run another post on how to recover it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I usually lift all the chain leaving the anchor stuck 15 mins before I am due to depart

Rising tides, waves, wash then do the job of freeing it for me.

I doubt this is the correct method so best wait for others to advise /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

servicing the windlass before you need it can be useful.

That seems to be the recommended way to recover an anchor that is deeply embedded and the windlass cant pull it out.

What kind of anchor have you got - my plough just comes up with the windlass, no matter how deep it's been buried.

Re: Anchoring(Have\'nt Got a Clue)

Current boat has a delta (plough type) and isnt normally a problem unless I have been in deep water and the windlass gets warm after recovering 65 m of chain especially if still warm from numerous moves ( not 100% happy with first spot or some plonker has come too close).

last boat had Danforth ? (fortress type), once enbedded in sticky mud it didnt want to come up so I always lifted the chain and then started to get ready to leave, it solved the problem and I have stuck with the habit.

What are we talking about here. Stopping for lunch on a calm day. Or trying to stay put in a F8 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

To put things in perspective:

Over the past few days, (probably because of this thread), i have consciously noticed that there is a reasonable amount of tension on our anchor cable at around 9 or 10 knots, (top end of a F3), and a lot of tension once it gets above about 12 knots. At 15kts+, the chain is stretching fairly taught, (possibly not straight to the anchor, but not far off).

There's a whole variety of boats in this anchorage, and all seem to be doing the same thing, so I dont think the reaction is specific to a Moody 44.

So ... I might suggest that we are talking about staying put in anything F3 and above.
