Hi all
Got a problem with my electric anchor winch. When attempting to operate all I get is a click. Have taken the winch and motor out and all the spindles are free. Replaced all this and guess what click. Could this be the solanoid? any ideas would be greatly apprecaiated.

Sounds like you could have low voltage and or a bad connection somewhere in your circuit which would give the same result. Try cleaning the battery connection and after retightening smear the terminals in petroleum jelly.

Eh? Dont understand that diagnosis pp. The click is the solenoid, so if it's clicking the solenoid is probly working ok, so the circuit voltage is ok. Unfortunately, this means the winch motor seems busted.....

also in a boat big enuf to have electric windlass he's gonna have several batteries so only worthwhile greasing them all up if really nnecessary!

Nearly certainly you are hearing the solinoid switch throwing across. This means that the low amperage ciruit (connecting consol switch to soliniod) is ok. The high amperage circuit (connecting battery to motor) is therefore probaly not getting power. I guess you will have a fuse or trip between the battery and the soliniod switch, check this. Make sure your battery has enough power. You can always jump lead from another battery and try throwing the soliniod again as a quick check. If no go then clean all connections between battery and soliniod and from the soliniod to the motor. Both postitive and negative. If still no go then check that the soliniod switch has actually connected the high amperage circuit. This can be done with a meter or bulb. Final check is to see if power is arriving at the motor. Do this with the motor connected as you need the load of the motor to cause the problem to occur and therefore reduce the voltage. If still no go then you probaly have a faulty motor.

As Talon suggests you will either have a fuse or CB between the solenoid and the winch - normally a CB for when (not if) the windlass overloads it all!
Check it's reset/intact.

Agree with Talon, when the solenoid clicks over they dont always connect on the high voltage side, happens alot with a certain make of dodgy Italian motorcycle.

Wow what a huge source of info from you guys. Much appreciated

There is only one click each time the button is depressed. and a definate thud when released. The batteries are OK and are always on charge, in fact the same battery turns over the starboard engine.

Will check out all your advice Thanks again
