Hey it's me again. This time I am gathering data on your anchors, chain and warp. I have tried to include most or all of the common anchors. Try not to be too perfectionist, if you have a brand that I have not caught, if possible choose the 'type' such as claw or danforth type rather than shouting because I missed out some guy who welds up anchors in a lock up in Portsmouth.

I have suggested two anchors, if you carry more great, but answer the two main anchors you use, if I did not limit this it could go on for ever!

I have set a limit of 10 days to capture as many responses as possible.
If you are about to buy a new anchor for the coming season, add it to your answers, but only definite purchases, not wish lists!

Enjoy!

I use the folding grapnel with a nylon rope that came with the boat we bought in August last year. It holds the boat in place with no wind at all!
The boat is 7.2 metres and weighs about 2 tonnes.

Guess I might need something different!

Could I get some advice from you guys?
Water depth here in Holland is mostly less than 4 metres and the anchor locker or what do you call it is not that large!

Dutchman´s Anchor

The simple answer -

The biggest anchor , the longest chain and the heaviest chain that you can fit on the boat.

To make it more sensible - You will probably end up with ; A 10 kilo CQR - most of your anchoring will be in sand/mud in that area. 5 metres of chain and 30 metres of rope.
But don´t forget the principles above.

Would that work for you ?

We all have our favourite style of anchor and so you will also receive many contrasting opinions - Enjoy filtering the information !

Re: Dutchman´s Anchor

IMHO Fit the biggest thing you think you AND your crew can handle, and if possible carry a spare thats about two thirds of the size. Your crew will love a manual windlass, worship an electric one as some sort of deity, especialy if you have lots of chain.

I like one piece anchors like bruce or delta because I ve had finger trouble with moving parts on danforth and cqr types over the years. As to what holds best - I think the answer is anything thats "properly set" - some types "properly set" better/easier than others depending on the bottom. Some types break out easier than others when the tide turns even when "properly set".

The bruce, delta and cqr have always done it for me, the danforth hasn't.

Hope this helps

But it does seem to show that Spade users seem to make much more noise per user than any other anchor type /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Ok more noise! What about anchors 3, 4 and 5? I think a poll which only surveys 2 anchors is a bit anchorist in approach, and I shall be writing a stiff note of complaint to the appropriate quango.

Tried to vote, but system says 'we already have a vote from this IP address'. Have definately NOT voted before... only just read post and am only user. Suspect it has something to do with AOL broadband users 'appearing' to behind some form of proxy address.

So vote may not be representative of AOL users !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I have informed Kim of this as it has happened to me on other polls. He suggested that he was trying to find a fix where it would be tagged to user name rather than IP address.

If you wish to be included in my inevitable pie chart please feel free (anyone) to PM me your answers, I will add them when I tally up in a few days.

195 votes, pretty good so far, but some more would be nice. Still no one using a sarca, I am interested in this anchor. The magazine results look good but nobody has taken the plunge!

If you have not voted already I urge you add to this poll, it is one of the most asked questions (nearly) on PBO.
