anchor ball and mooring

I can't quite get my head round the idea that a ship which is "out of control" can choose not to hit a moored yacht that is showing an anchor light as opposed to others that are not.

Whenever a ship has hit moored yachts on the Orwell, and there have been quite a few in the past 30 years, the reason stated has always been a temporary loss of control, variously blamed on steering failure, unexpectedly strong crosswind, etc., etc.

There may be more to come, as we are told that the latest very long ferry may in crosswind conditions be proceeding up the channel at angle such that she occupies the entire fairway.

>No legal reason to show a light when moored but to me it comes under the heading of self preservation.

Take a look at Colregs, you might change your mind. Some countries, such as Portugal, fine you on the spot if you don't fly a ball or an all round white light.

>Garden lights and many LED lights

Garden lights are not fit for purpose, just like nav lights anchor lights should have a two mile range.

Hi all. Light vessels have one anchor deployed and a lot of chain out, that is why their position varies a bit, they swing to the one anchor. Only time you will see them moored up is in Harwich harbor.

On a mooring? Before LEDs, when incandescent bulbs could flatten a battery in a night or two, how were boats stored on moorings supposed to comply when unattended for weeks?

I think you misread "moored" as "anchored".

I think so to and would be interested to hear just where colregs say a light has to be shown on known moorings. Obviously on anchor one is needed and I agree that garden lights do not comply and likely to lead to fine.
