I've bought twice through them (Brighton and Port Solent offices) and have no complaints at all; in fact they were helpful and professional throughout. It's very likely I'll list my boat with them when the time comes to sell. There are opinions to the contrary however, and if you do a search you'll find a couple of interesting threads, if the search actually works properly that is.
OK - well I can only give my experience with Essex Boatyards as I do not know Ancasta.
I recently placed a deposit on a boat with EBY and I pulled out a month later on viewing the model. They immediately returned the deposit with an invitation to come back to them in the future.
Wern't much interested in helping us look for a 40k+ boat, too busy with facebook or value not worth them turning around for. New boat bought else where now moored a few pontoons up from there office.
Welcome to the forum. We bought from them a couple of years ago now. I would say they where ok. You could tell they are working for the vendor, so never did me any favours, but thats just what I guess you would expect from them!!!
As for money safety, I think if I was in the market to buy at the moment, I would be checking and double checking any company info I could find, also I'd be up front and tell them your worries. If I was a genuine broker in the current climate (and just to point out I'm in the fashion retail game, not related to the marine industry) I would completely understand your worries and already have measures in place to stop any concerns............??
So keep your wits about you, bargin hard and get stuck in!!!!!
As a buyer they have always been more than helpful, expecially with stock boats. Never went through with the purchase but found them knowledgable and polite. They also understand the boat market and pricing in the current climate.
I have heard that aftersales on Brokerage boats were not good, but surely that is not their job?
I viewed a boat through them last Saturday and the salesman unlocked the boat and then just stood there. He had no knowledge of the boat and no idea how to convert the saloon seating into a bed. Made no real effort to try and sell the boat to me
I bought through Ancasta last May. Monies paid into a properly designated Client Account with no transfer to their Office Account until I'd accepted the boat and 'taken the keys'.
Could the person who was showing you the boat, been a weekend fill in, just minding the shop? If you have been involved in customer relations, sloppy service is very obvious.
As a potential buyer and actual seller I can say that they are the worst broker I have come across... that has been the experience of my friends too!
I should say, that for the sake of clarity, I am talking about Plymouth only. I have no experience elsewhere.
They were generally unreliable, they told me that they had done showings when I know they hadn't and they ignored my repeated requests to contact me prior to showing so I could tidy up and keep track of viewings. They also had an annoying and patronising attitude when dealing with me.
i didnt think they were that great but think it depends on who and how you deal with them.
we bought our boat through Sealine South Coast who were owners by Ancasta and they were very good.
we had out boat on brokerage with Ancasta and they were ok at a difficult time in the market. they seem to over price their boats and are always keen to suggest droping the price. like others have said, the often didnt tell you about viewings and getting feedback from them was never forthcoming in our experience.
in the end, we had joing brokerage and they didnt manage to close the deal with a buyer so it sold through another broker.
in terms of financial security, i would think they would be well up there at the top of the list tho as opposed to a smaller broker, that said, we sold through a smaller broker and they were very very profesional and open with what was happening with out money at all times!
I have been talking to people since my post and I understand that the Plymouth Branch has changed hands since my experiences and so I wouldn't read too much into my trashing of them!
Given the change of management I might well be prepared to give them another try.
Thanks for update but I'm still surprised there hasnt been more praise for Ancasta considering the number of people that have read the post. I am talking about Ancasta in Port Hamble - any comments anyone?
I know the Ancasta guys from Port Solent, Mercury marina and a couple form port Hamble, from my point of view nothing but praise for them /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
