In the situation this german couple found them selves in i would say polypropylene trailed over the side if you have time to do that, to jam up the prop then tow them backwards fast enough it will flood the RIB , Pirates dont sound like they were armed.

A friend who is ex SBS and went into marine security basically said if they were buzzed by anyone less than a mile from them it was assumed their actions are hostile, as soon as they were in range he used a snipers rifle, 1 warning shot then the second one is through the outboard

No, you need to have a bit of humanity when you are told that a fellow sailor was murdered.
Have you never heard of gallows humour? I am not impressed by your attempt to imply it was what I wrote which was hurtful when it was what you wrote. And I think you are reading an exclamation mark as if it were a LOL.

All these ideas of putting holes into the pirates boat - It really does not strike me as such a good method for dealing with unwanted visitors. especially when some distance from shore.

"Oh dear. It seems we are about to start sinking, miles away from the nearest land. I wonder where we could avoid getting awfully wet?"
Where exactly are they going to go?

I assume you would have to be a trained SBS sniper to attain that accuracy even from a large ship at speed...

It's one thing to suggest all this while at home behind our PC , I think it be very different in the heat of the moment .

To start with how many of us have had fast rib coming up at us only for them to pass us , and then there the times when they turn out to be officials ,
So at what point do we start getting out the fuel cans , shot guns and ropes to throw over the side ?

Plus in much of the world many people working outside wear balaclavas, including the fishermen zooming at you in the parogue wanting to swap a few fish for some water/cigarettes.
Thankfully the keyboard rambos will never go anywhere.

When they can see my crazy eyes and my naked body covered in red ketchup with my shotgun ready.
One can generally know when a rib is close by I.e enough time to through my pile of poo at them and my flame thrower toy petrol pistol can reach them
They normally look mean, disheveled , carrying machetes in there hands and heading straight for you.
I bet it's not the local police coming to say hello.
Any ways I would wait until they put hands on the boat then pour the petrol

But that's not our problem. ;)

if they are using words such as " oh dear " and " awfully " then it would be safe enough not to consider them as pirates .:)

Uh? your point is? The Antartic Pilot is thinks that air rifles dont have much punch! I am pointing out that nowadays they do!
My point is you aim a barrel at me I'm not going to assume it's a fairly harmless air rifle, I'm going to assume the worst and if I'm carrying a gun you've had it.
